I hate these guys, they harass me daily with mail, but I just discovered they have the Outdoor Channel on 338. Could be old news, but I'm pretty happy about it. Lots of Gun stuff and the "Gold Prospectors Show", finally.

I hate Cox. We just dumped them for Directv. The only problem is Cox is pretty much the only way to go for internet in town, so we're stuck with them for internet.

I'm guessing that they figure a bunch of guys interested in big guns are trying to compensate for personal deficiencies,

Goes to show you what advertisers know!

Honestly, I don't mind Cox. Better than the provider where I used to live. Their high speed internet connections are top notch, their digital phone service is 100x better than Embarq, and I have no problem with the programming they offer. Whenever I've had a problem, they've been quick to fix it, and unlike my experiences with past providers, they don't automatically assume it is my fault or my wiring or my equipment.

As far as the harassment goes, it's pretty easy to ignore. Businesses need to advertise, and so long as they don't call me constantly when I am trying to eat dinner, I don't care what they shove in my mailbox.

Well, I'm glad someone gets good service from Cox. Long story short, they f'ed up big time then charged me $50 to come fix their screwup. When I called, they refused to take off the charge so I canceled my $125 a month service. I kept the internet though because it's really all there is in town. Then today they send a tech to cap the cable lines at the pole. I tell him I still have a cable modem and he caps it anyway. I tell him that he just cut off my modem and he has to go back up the pole to reconnect. Cox just can't ever get their shit straight.

Sorry for the hijack. Just had to deal with the Cox people again today so it's fresh in my mind.

Hey neighbor, thanks for the update. I have not been that high up on the 'dial' in quite some time.

I can't believe they finally came to their senses. I've been hammering their customer service people for months and months now. The last answer I got from them was only about two months ago when they yet again reiterated their rejection of my request in no uncertain terms.  I guess there were more people than just me asking and we finally wore them down

Cox is the lesser of the two evils.  Directv renewed my contract when they replaced a bad HD DVR box without telling me.  They also replaced my 1 year contract with a 2 year since their contracts for HD DVR changed during my service.  You have to pay a per month left on your contract charge to get out of their deathly grasp.  At least with cox you dont have a contract and can cancel whenever and in most cases get a pro-rated return on the last few weeks/days left in the month for the bill.  I have Cox for internet and several times a week have to reset the Cable Modem due to signal loss (and not within the house, I've replaced the RG6 twice at their instruction to prove it wasn't my house).  I'm still getting the run around from them when really all that needs to happen is a fix at the street level that they won't do apparently.

When you reset your modem, does it reconnect right away?  Sometimes mine doesn't come back for a couple of hours.
I'm going to change my cable this weekend at their suggestion. They say it might be the cable or my modem. I'm not sure i want to spend $75 on a new modem
if that's not the problem. How do you check a modem?
What else have they suggested?
It worked fine until a few weeks ago. Then i would lose it a couple times a week. Now i'm resetting a few times a day.

New wire/new modem are their stock answers.  If you're losing acquisition for several hours its an indication of network trouble in the area.  I have seen this problem when I had a bad piece of RG6 though, once I replaced the wire the connection was much better.

Depending on your modem there is usually an HTML page you can view it on via the network.  Access your modem (check the online .pdf file or look at your manual for the IP address) and there should be a list of your signal strength on the up and down leg (usually listed as +/- db).  If it's above +10 or below -10 thats normally a bad indication of signal over-age or signal loss.

I'd start there, feel free to PM me with questions or further recovery steps.
