Sad.
Our kids are put in the unenviable position where nothing they do is right. Everything they do is second guessed by a media that will jump on them at the slightest wrongdoing.
It's a wonder that any of them actually bears arms in defense of a country that gives them lip service, up until the time something happens.

Reminds me of the book by Marcus Lutrell, 'Lone Surivivor'  where the team was compromised by a couple of goatherds (hostile toward them). They had the option of killing them, or letting them go, to warn others of the teams presence.
They were released, and soon after that they were attacked by a small army of Taliban.
13 American dead later (3 team members and a chopper full of SEAL rescuers) Lutrell debates to this day the decision to let those guys go.

Most of us say "Gee I'm glad I'm not in that situation" and will probably never be.
But what about those that we put in that situation?
This is a WAR, and we need to change some things about the ridiculous rules of engagement our Men and Women are subject to, and let them do their jobs.

The RoE sucks but the micro management of the war is worse.  Iraq is not America and will never have American democracy or legal system.  To treat the war otherwise as they are doing is getting people killed.

You know the one thing that really burns my ass is even when you do the right thing, you're going to be screwed.  I've seen this time and again.  I've made decisions when I only had seconds to make them and then have leadership pick my every decision apart and run me across the coals for it.  I hate that shit.

In these soldiers case, it just seemed to be a comedy of errors.  Now that snipers life is fucked.  I know how it was for those guys being pushed to exhaustion.  When I was deployed, I only averaged 3 to 4 hours sleep and then expected to work 14 to 16 hours patrolling.  Its a wonder we didnt have any ND's or vehicle crashes because we were zombies out there from a lack of sleep.

I had gone on a joint patrol as back up with our IP's to serve a warrant(IP's need warrants not us).  While we were there, the IP's caught some dude with a hand held multi channel Motorola radio and confiscated it.  We didn't know about it until we got back to the station when they told us.  I had them bring it to me.  It was a FCC controlled item not to be sold outside the USA for obvious reasons.  I radioed the TOC about it to see if we could go back and roll up the joker who had it.  They asked if the IP's had given the owner a poperty receipt when the confiscated it.  No they didn't.  Our leadership contacted base legal for advice.  They said to give it back to the owner!  I argued to the contrary.  I got my ass handed to me and was told to give it back since the IP's didn't do their job like they were supposed to do.

Stupid fucking pogue ass officers and lawyers sitting in the wire.  Unfortunately I dropped the radio and it fell underneath the tires of my 14,000 lb HMMWV.  Then I gave it back.

These radios serve no other purpose other than to radio positions of coalition patrol movements for ambushes and IED triggermen.  We were always told to be on the lookout for this behavior.

Some WAR we are fighting...
