A guy wants to trade me a Eotech 552 that he mounted on an AR and then took off, for a new RRA upper that I have.

Not considering the merits of the trade, just yet, I know next to nothing about Eotechs.  I've used regular scopes on ARs for coyote hunting, plinking, etc.

So, what should I know about Eotechs before deciding?  Worth having one?  Is there a different model you'd recommend?

I am not a fan of the fuzzy view the HUD displays.

I have seen 2 Huds fail in the last year. All were work guns and carried in cars. Beats me what the deal was, but each one lost its glass.

Is that concern a model specific concern, or with all Eotechs?

It was the newer 552 with the AA or AAA batteries. They replaced the broken model in 2 weeks. I just thought it was an odd failure, then to see two of them in a short time frame.

Another thing you might wanna check too is if the rails on the 552 are in spec.  A while back they had some that when mounted on a 1913 rail the 552 would sit tilted on an AR. I had that problem with 3 552s I had before and finally had to sell them to get rid of the problem.
Got an Aimpoint and had zero problems with it. There are good 552 units out there....just gotta check carefully. If this one had L3 stamped on the battery box then it should be ok.

The guy is not local, so sounds like it would be hard to know for sure if it would work right

The "F" revision should take care of the afore mentioned mounting issues and a few other problems that existed in the "E" models.

As long as you stay away from the N battery 511 series, you're OK. I've had a pair of those that suffered terminal corrosion and one was replaced by EOTech with a 512.

I like EOTechs a lot, but they should only be considered for close in, fast action shooting IMHO even though you have the small 1 MOA dot in the center of the doughnut.

I have a 512 (AA Model) mounted on my M4. When I got it I did a quick 25 yd Zero and it seems to be holding up well. I have done some close quarter work with it and I played around and did some drills at approximately 100 yds and surprisingly it was spot on. I do notice when I turn up the intensity the reticle gets blurry.

As far as the factory mount goes the 512 has held Zero up to this point. I would like to eventually get a LaRue mount just to have a better mounting platform. As far as reliabilty goes, I guess time will tell.

eotech will warranty the sights for 2 years from the manufacture date on the bottom. If the one you are trading for is under 2 years old you can feel safe.

I bought one in the EE and when it arrived it sat canted and the glass wasn't completely clear. I sent it to eotech and they changed out almost everything except the housing and sent it back in under a month, I have nothing but good things to say about their customer service at eotech.

I have a 552 RevF and it has been a great optic.  The RevF models seem to be a bit more robust.  A couple of things....  If the reticle looks excessively grainy there is a good chance it may be how your eye is picking up the reticle or you simply have the intensity too high.  I have a slight astigmatism in my dominant eye and if I look at any red dot without my prescription lenses the dot gets distorted and starry.  Because the EoTech reticle is somewhat busier the distortion can seem worse than say an Aimpoint.  Everything sharpens up when I wear my prescription sunglasses.  Just a thought.

Regarding the mounting, mount the optic directly to the receiver.  I am not a fan of risers or riser mounts with EoTechs.  Risers are needed with Aimpoints.  The EoTech window and field of vision is so much greater that an Aimpoint there is no need to use a riser.  You will not notice the front sight tower if you use the optic correctly, ie: both eyes open, target focus up close/ reticle focus at distance.  This will become increasingly apparent when you shoot adverse angles or off your support side shoulder.  Also, by using a riser there is one more link in the chain to screw up.  By mounting it directly to the receiver you have one bolt to worry about keeping tight.

There are some things that make the EoTech really stand out but battery life is not one of them.  The 552 will give you decent battery life.  The circuitry has a tendency to draw from the batteries a quite a bit more than the Aimpoint.  I like the AA option.  You can pick up batteries ANYWHERE.  Keep a spare set in the grip of you rifle and you should be good to go.

Great tip about the riser. I had a 512 and put it on the riser. I found It a little hard to co-whitness your BUIS. With a good cheak weld on your stock. All I saw was the very tip of the front site. And could only see through the upper half of the BUIS.
