I need to know if there are any 500 yard or greater ranges or desert spots when one could fire calibers ranging from .22 to .308 that are not membership only.

Thanks!

Apex is a no shoot area - hope you guys go miles and miles behind it because many family's have been restricted to only that area for OHV use. Little kids ride all over out there

Be nice guys.... she's new.

Molon- your best bet may be to go far out into the desert and set up out there.  There are some good areas down near Sloan, and some up off of US95 past the Mt. Charleston turnoffs.

I'm not familiar enough with the Boulder range, and I *believe* Desert Sportsman's longest range is 400 yds.  I'll have to ask hubby when he wakes up.

Thanks Bed_Head. I've got someone coming in from out of town to give me marksmanship training next month and I don't know the surrounding desert enough to pick a spot without input from the experts here.

We have a 500 yd range in Beatty.  Just drive up and use it. 1 heavy steel bench.  From Vegas, take the Airport road just before Beatty.  Drive past the Airport and the range is on the left.  Also a covered 50 yd pistol range.  If you like it, you may wish to PM me to join the Beatty shooting club.  $20 per year.

There is a 440 yard and 500 meter range at Desert Sportsman, weekdays are good for shooting since there is usually only a few folks out.  Members only though.

I have set up a 700 yard range out by Corn creek a few times, it is very time consuming due to the fact that it is BLM ground, and you have to bring ALL of your own supplies with you (bench, targets, stands, range finders ect.).  About half the time, some hon-yocker screws up the range by parking at a midpoint somewhere.

Overton has a 2 bench range at the end of Overton wash that ranges from 25feet to 500 yards.  It is primative, the benches are nice, but I bring my own shade in the summer.  The steel plates are at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 yards....but they are scattered all over the hill side, and you wont see them unless you know where to look.

I am not too familure with Boulder City range, been there a few times, but only did pistol shooting.

There is always the Byron turn off, or similar , but there again you have to set up your own range.

500 yrds is a long way.....you might need to go out of town along the I-15 North for 30 miles or so, or out towards Alamo (Delmar, Rainbow Canyon) to set up.

You CAN join the NRA at a discount through ARfcom ($25/year instead of $30) and it's well worth the price.  If you're ANTI-NRA, that's another matter..... but then again, I've never really understood being anti-NRA..... sure they're not perfect, but they still are the biggest and most powerful to fight the fight.  FWIW, I joined the NRA and GOA.

Hidden Valley, southeast of the Sloan area, has a great long range shooting area.  There's a road that runs out to a quarry.  It splits and a head to the north on the east side of some hills.  The valley opens up and has some good long range shooting area as the vegetation lays pretty low.  Last time I was out there was probably 4 years ago and there were target frames setup out to 300 yards off the side of the road.  You can pretty much shoot as far as you want to.   Probably gets breezy out there though since it is in a valley.

DO NOT shoot out there.  It should be physically posted (unless the signs have been stolen) and is off-limits to shooting for a reason i.e. official OHV area with tons of folks using it for that.  My boss and 2-3 of his buddies were riding bikes out there a few years ago and his friend got shot in the head (through his helmet) and died.....and no, I am not joking.

I grew up riding at the Nellis dunes, and everyone knew not to "go that way". The people who were stooting there were pretty good at not shooting in our direction, and we would't ride in theres. Then a Cop got nailed in the Bean causing the no shooting in the Valley thing. Was this the guy you were talking about?

I bet it is.  I will ask my boss if the guy (his friend) was a cop.  I know my boss was there when it happened though.

I remember when that guy got shot out by Apex.
I am a moutain biker, and there have been 2 times I can remember when I rode by, near, and heard gunshots while riding my pedal bike. It is kind of un-nerving to say the least, and like many have said, most of the areas 'outside of town' here in Vegas, are multi-use.

I almost shot a guy when we went out there a few years back..luckily Animus or Defensorfortis yelled to stop me because he saw the guy coming into my line of fire before I did.   That place is too crowded now.  Too many ATV's and suck that aren't watching where they are going.  We found a good place to go but it's a secret..

Bronco Glen has it right.  Hidden Valley is the best and least used.  There is a dry lake bed and to the east are some nice big hills.  From the dry lake bed to the base of the mountains is about 1.25 miles.  And it's mostly low brush.  There are some OHV paople out there but they seem to like the nothern valley better.  If you turn the other direction you are shooting up hill but you have thousands of rocks for targets.  It's an up hill shoot, but you are far enough away that the highway is 4 miles and over the hill.  The big plus for this area is that the road going into it is paved and teh unpaved roads going north are pretty solid.  Trucks are reccommended but not essential.

Thanks
Tony

Actually it's not a secret and most people here know where it is.  Up 93 it's an abandoned mine.  You won't get 500 yards out of it though unless you want to climb the hill and place targets on the hillside like I do.  Pretty much a pain in the ass and there aren't any moving targets i.e OHV

I'm a dork..I forgot that you didn't know that...Most people here knew that he was over there....

Now it all makes sense!

I was just playing with you... I mean, I didn't know he was overseas until you said that but I figured it out when you said something about the holidays.

So is it safe to assume he is stationed at Nellis?

Yep..unfortunately..j/k  I know you're teasing.. My mind has not been on the job the past few days..I forget when new people come into the forum that they don't know everyone's stats.

I know it's not a secret..I was joking..

Way to be neighborly, Ms. Feisty!

Actually I just don't remember how to get there..

*coughcough*

Animus knows where it is but I haven't been in so long I don't remember how to get there.. but I can find out

*gets crayon out to take notes*

Might be a little while..i don't get to talk to him much anymore..He'll be home for the holidays though...

The holidays? If you mean International Talk Like A Pirate Day, you've missed it for this year....

Molon-Labe-

Apex was the spot for me and my shooting friends, i.e. ANIMUS and Fiesty to name a few.  Too many bozos and a friendy burying his truck up it axles cinched that place for me. Remember that one ANIMUS?  The old silver mine that ANIMUS mentioned is a good spot, but the last time me and my buddy Jinx went up there a group of hood rats showed up and started acting like assholes made me leery of that spot.  I can remember going out to Apex as late as 2004 and never seeing anyone out there on a weekday.  I did a quick run out there in 06 on a Tuesday to function fire a new rifle and I saw 3 other trucks out there.  Apex is not safe.

As far as desert shooting goes, always bring a friend, supplies that could get you out of trouble, a cell phone with good coverage, and always have a loaded pistol on you at all times out there.  You just don't know what kind of assholes you could run into out there.

Make a day of shooting, go a ways out of town and have a good time.  You're less likely to run into idiots and you see some nice scenery.

Here's food for thought.  Remember in the movie "Casino" where they referred to holes in the desert?  An old Las Vegas cop and I don't mean Metro, told me that wasn't bullshit from that movie.  The desert out around Vegas for about an hours drive in any direction from Vegas was or possibly still is prime body dumping grounds for all those who pissed off the mob.  The old cop told me one hour's driving is about the limit of a mobsters driving attention span before he wanted to dump a body.  So keep that and all the other wicked things people do out in the desert in mind.  Not everyone is a shooter, or off roader out there.

Have fun and be careful.

I remember that one...I didn't recognize my truck when he got home.  I got to drive the car to work that week until he cleaned it up..
