Find anything yet? Nothing yet, sir. Find anything yet? Nothing yet, sir. How about you? We ain't found shit! news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070904/ap_on_re_us/steve_fossett Adventurer and world-record holder Steve Fossett missing. Launched from a private airstrip in Smith Valley. One-seater piston-driven aerobatic plane, no flight plan filed. I wonder if he took his bang bus to Burning Man and just forgot to tell anybody? |
God speed to the man if he is still alive. That is no place I would want to be stranded, hurt and unprepared. |
Some funny stuff here

just too damn funny!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess his nuts are so big and he's such a badass pilot that he didn't feel the need to file a flight plan, nor did he bring any of the usual crash survival equipment (if what I heard on the news tonight is correct). Sorry, but this guy's ego wrote a check his ass couldn't cash. |
|
I hate to say it but you know what this guy fucked up Zero Flight Plan and the box is'nt sending a signal,,,,the guy is down in a Canyon. I watched the local channel this morning and Trooper Diddle Dink McFiddle stated that 'We are making a effort to Recover errr ahh Rescue the Pilot' |
He was supposed to be back by noon --- it's a private strip, and the way things are run there are extremely casual. Special aviation-oriented guests (like Fossett) get the run of the various aircraft stored there while visiting. Little different than taking a quad out for a couple hours. Surprised he took the Decathalon, but then again it is a fun toy. Hopefully he didn't splatter it all over a hillside. |

I have to disagree with 'most' VFR flights being operated on a flight plan. I'm pretty sure they aren't. After all, there's no law to do so. The last time I flew VFR (maybe 12 years ago +/-) I hardly ever filed a VFR flightplan (opening and closing those can be a pain in the rear at times) BUT I usually got VFR flight following through center. That way they got you on radar, know who you are, where you are and where you're going.... However, just taking an aerobatic plane for a joyride over the desert is a different ballgame. I'm surprised that they don't have a 'practice box' for aerobatic flight that the locals favor around the flying ranch. That might have helped to narrow the search down..... |
|
One account I read said that he was scouting out locations for a possible run at a land speed record. That being the case, there's not a realistic way to file a flight plan for an outing of that nature. The few times I flew VFR (as a passenger) we never filed a flight plan, just turned on a transponder and checked in with ATC as we traversed their area of coverage. |
| A guy here at work is on the Civil Air Patrol, he said the type of plane he was flying was made from aluminum and covered with material; had the plane gone down and burst into flames there would be nothing more than a pile of aluminum...which, when searching for it hundreds of feet above ground will be very difficult to find. |
|
I was just watching Fox News this search is approaching the one Mil. mark Holy Shit Batman! and guess who gets to pay for it Joe Schmucko of course!, it seems to me that Barron Hilton should be liable for all this mess(think about it). I would like to see the family get closure but come on this is turning into a Fiasco, expanding the search area to the size of Massachusetts WTF did this guy turn into a Glider? or is he having tea with James Bond at a underground lair North of Black Rock Desert? Enoughs Enough |
They would have given up on you and I on the first 2 hours.
|
Seriously, all day wednesday we were watching Navy Blackhawks fly around in circles over Dayton. If it were any of us, they wouldn't care. The disparity is infuriating. If you're rich or cute, the rescue effort goes on until the end. Not very egaltarian now, is it? |
|
The guy is likely dead, if not from the crash then from the desert. The wreckage will not be found without great expense using the scan and pray method they are employing. What a waste of money this is turning out to be. Just call it what it is: "Mr. Stunt Man takes his final flight into no-mans-land, Nv." |
The guy here at work on the Civil air Patrol said that they have now found a total of 7 other plane crash sites. Some of them date back quite sometime I guess. Seems odd to me that all of a sudden 7 wrecks are found searching for one guy...what kind of search was performed when they went missing? Personally, I could give a fuck about this guy, rich, famous, too good to follow protocol...dude brought it on himself. Had it been any of our asses, the public wouldn't have heard shit and there sure as hell wouldn't have been this big of a rescue/retrieval mission (if one at all).
|
If that is true, I'd really be interested to see how the authorities explain all the effort put out to find one rich, relatively unimportant guy. He doesn't know any national secrets and he is not vital to the security of our country. Each human life is valuable and to place a higher priority on the location of one guy due to his status as "adventurer" semi-celebrity is shameful. If they really found seven other crash sites, then they should be kicking themselves in the ass for years of neglect. At this point I hope they find him alive and stick him with the rescue and search bill. |
This report says 6 RGJ...you know how reports go, could be 6, could be 7 who knows. I asked the guy here at work how long they would have looked for my ass, he says 3-4 days...this guy gets 2 weeks.
