Anybody have or know about the Beretta 96 (.40 caliber)?  I see em listed for sale, but it looks like Beretta does not make em anymore.

Try berettaforum.net. Great place for Beretta info. Hope it helps.

A friend of mine had a stainless 96.  Nothing special just an 11 round .40 pistol with a shitty trigger pull.  I'm jaded since I hate our issued M9 pistols anyway.

Not to disagree with you, ANIMUS.

But, if he is looking for a Beretta I would look at a 92 FS, or an M9 with a blue finish.

Just the Ol' 2 pennies.

Thanks for the input.  I found some for a good deal (as far as being under market price), but if they aren't good guns I'll pass

I didn't mean for my comments to come off like the pistol is crap or anything.  Plenty of people like them.  I've owned a 92FS in the past and it was a reliable pistol.  Just didn't do it for me ergonomically.  I've only had problems with a few very shot out military issued pistol.

Hell, go rent one and put some rounds down range.  What could it hurt if you have never shot one?  You might like it.

i would agree with ishoot. fired both a 96 and a 92fs. they worked well but personally i did'nt like their ergonomics. when i want to carry a hi-cap 9 i carry a hi power practical

Or one of the Taurus clones.

The way the Berettas have A) their safeties on the slide and B) backwards safeties (down is safe, up is fire? What were those dago clowns smoking?) is a total turn-off.

The Beretta isn't a bad pistol. Gunmonkey and I had a long discussion about the Beretta and came to the conclusion that owning a Beretta was like being in an arranged marriage. If I were forced into it, I could learn to love. But since I'm not, and there are other options, I don't see a point in owning one.

That's just me though, maybe you adore Berettas and can't live without one.

Sportsman's Guide and Cheaper Than Dirt sell used 96 uppers, which will slide right onto a 92. If you can't find a 96, your best bet might be to buy a used 92 and the aftermarket upper.

This would give you multiple caliber options in the same pistol. Kind of like owning a Glock 23 and a Glock 19 barrel / upper.

Thanks for the info.

I haven't handled a 92 for about 10 years, and then I shot a couple rounds from it outside in the forest--it was a friend's gun.  I should go pick one up again because of the ergonomic concerns mentioned.

I have both Beretta 92 and 96, both were OK, I have better groupings with 96FS.  Regret giving 96 to my brother, his in the navy based in Japan, doesn't use it that much rusting in a storage.

I'll take it back when he comes home....

For what it is worth, I think the ergonomics of the 92 are fantastic; that pistol fits my hand better than anything else  have ever  shot.  Maybe I have mutant hands?

And if you are not happy with the stock trigger, fixing it up is not a problem.  Just a couple purchases from wolff will make the trigger even smoother.

Maybe it has to do with the size of one's hands?  I have larger hands, so I like my 1911 style pistols, and my Kimber Polymer double stack, over for example my Browning Hi Power which is a little smaller.

I checked sportsmanguide and cheaperthandirt, and couldn't find the 96 slides, etc.  Maybe they're sold out?

FWIW, I love my Beretta 92FS. It's the first hangun I ever purchased, did so as soon as I came of age way back in '89. I have probably put about 1000 rounds through her over the years and she is just as reliable as the day I bought purchased (I can still remember that sweet California 14-day waiting period). Its on my CCW, though I rarely carry it, for obvious reasons. But, it is reliable as a swiss clock and a pleasure to shoot. BTW I now carry an HK USP compact as my main CCW.

Your mileage may vary.

If I were to buy another Beretta this would be the one.

I own the Beretta 96F Centurion, have happily had it  since 1991.  No rust, no dent, just peachy.  Fires and handles pretty well, it's my big gun aside from my Firestar M43 9mm and my Glock 27.

My sidearm in the military is the M9, it's the same size as the 96F Centurion except the 96 has a flushed barrel with the slide.  Same ergo, size and all, weight is the same I think.  96 has more recoil but honestly, the M9 and the 96F in my opinion is the same weapon, just the size of the bullet is the difference.  I've shot the M9 a lot and my 96F.  Reason why I have the 96 is cause of bigger round and my Glock is also a .40

I love em both, I carry the Glock for CCW.  Since I can't carry the Colt M4 around.
