A friend and I need to attain the NRA Certified Instructor status so we can teach the rifle and shotgun merit badges to our Boy Scouts. We're both accomplished shooters and CCW permittees (not that that matters) but you have to have NRA certification to teach those MB's.

I already tried Jim Mayhugh, my first choice, and he's not doing another class for a least a year it sounds like. He turned me on to Boulder City Rifle and Pistol Club, but they're not doing their courses until January 2008.

Any ideas or refs for here in Vegas?

Thanks to you both for your responses. I need to be more clear: we need NRA-certified Rifle Instructor and NRA-certified Shotgun Instructor status.

I appreciate you both volunteering your time to help teach the scouts. We have had other offers like that and taken them up on it, but we're looking to the future and realize that we really need to be certified ourselves.

I've been to that NRA page you linked; it only shows two instructors for Nevada and neither offers the Rifle/Shotgun Instructor courses.

I'll keep waiting to see if anyone else has a response, and if not, I guess we'll have to wait until the Boulder City class comes up again.

Ron Drake certified me about 5 years ago, and has classes on a pretty regular basis. I have taught Boy scouts, Civil Air Patrol, and Police Cadets when I was out at Nellis. let me know if you need help, and I think that I could get a few more Instructors too. Ron's number is 497-4538 or 734-7134

Myself and the other Instructors do it for free for kids.

Ron's out of commission until late summer time frame.  He is a "tax man" by trade.

Ok, Lets get something going! Desert Sportmans invited me out, as well as boulder, to get a jr. program started. I'm sure that theres a few of you out there thats certified to teach. When you instruct a kid, and he (or she) shoots a dime sized group for the first time, and wants you to autograph there target, you get an ear to ear grin, and have to turn away because you got dust, or metal fragments in your eyes, its the best feeling in the world! And because there Boy Scouts, your looking at maybe the next future President, or at least one hell of a fighter for our Second Amendment rights in the future! Its an obligation. So who's in!

See if you can get in touch with the training instructor John Sneed at Boulder Rifle and pistol Club .  He is an excellent instructor and teaches most modalities of NRA instruction to include range safety instruction.

Our Venturing Crew Advisors also need Instructor training.  I can probably round up at least a half dozen adults involved with scouting to make it worthwhile if someone wants to teach a course.
