Hey guys, I'm new to the area (and state), and I was wondering if anyone did open carry in Vegas (not North Las Vegas).  I will be getting my CCW as soon as time permits...but until then, is open carry a realistic option (mostly for evening walks with the wife, usually well after sunset)?

Thanks,

Keith

I open carried a little bit before getting my CCW. Mostly walks around the neighborhood and trips to the corner store. Nothing that took too much time or where I was aroung large groups of people though.

Try it out. It is perfectly legal and if anyone says anything just politely inform them that it is perfectly legal and that thousands of people do it every day. Know when to back off though. If it is an anti its best to just leave it alone. If they are curious though it won't hurt to talk to them about it for a little bit. Just try not to come off too preachy.

Most LEs have an SOP that requires that they check out any call they get regarding firearms. What that means is that Granny Nuesbaum will call 911 and say "OMG! There's a crazy man walking down the street with a gun and a woman." and by the time the officers respond it will have become that you are holding a woman hostage at gunpoint (Don't laugh, I have experienced something very similar). They will hassle you long and hard. As long as you don't give them any reason, they'll likely leave you be, with the caveat that they are gonna respond every time they get called. It's a hard line to walk as an honest citizen.
Not all cops are like that, but you are more likely to meet Barney Fife than Sheriff Taylor.
Personal experience based on many years of open carry in Douglas County and Carson City.

Why not NLV?

I do it all the time, even into the bank.

Wolfpack,

I guess becuase I don't fully understand NLV's "loaded weapon" clause (no loaded weapons in vehicles, or some such wording)...when I called NLV police for an explanation, it was suggested that I simply get the CCW, and their special rules no longer apply.

Do I misunderstand that I cannot have a loaded pistol in my vehicle while driving thru NLV?

We have discussed this alot in the past. Open carry is legal in NLV. NLV law states you can't have a loaded gun in your car if you don't have a CCW unless you are going to and from a range or some such BS. I've talked with many NLV officers and this law isn't designed for you, it is designed for the people at "D" St near I-15. The NLVPD really isn't worried too much about soccerdad having a pistol in his car, it is a law they use to add more charges to the dregs of society.

You said your getting your CCW and that is good so you don't have to worry about any of the special BC or NLV laws but open carry is legal in NLV, I have asked the city council and the city attorney.

BTW, welcome to the NVHTF!

That is sad to hear gunmonkey. When I was i kid in the early 70s growing up in Gardnerville Ranchos it was very common to see gun racks in trucks and open carry. I killed many a rabbit in the Sand Pit area of the Ranchos. Progress really sucks sometimes.

Ironically, I work about 5 miles north-east of D street and I15. *sigh*  But once I get the CCW I will be checking if work will let me carry.  Issue may be that they are cali-based....but on the other hand they have agressive web filtering in place, and ar15.com is open (as well as every other site I have tried..gotta be a good sign)

I have my blue cards...took me a whole afternoon to do all the paperwork.

Do you guys reccomend laminating them, or something to help them last a bit longer? Or is that not allowed?

Just to clarify, wasn't there a post last week about Boulder City's ordinance predating the 1989 preemption law, and so CCW carry in Boulder City could be illegal?

One of cards is laminated. The shop where I bought the gun did that for me. Go for it.

Yes there was. It was in one of the desert shooting area threads if I'm not mistaken.

Boy, I do understand that you guys are saying; however, I just do not think it is a good idea in the Las Vegas area.  It is much better to just get your Concealed Firearm Permit (CCW) from Metro and call it good.

Open carry may be ok in the rural counties; but in high crime Las Vegas, a handgun on your belt is just begging for a confrontation with law enforcement that I do not think you really want.

I agree, MP5.  Too bad it's that way

How many criminals or gang bangers have you ever seen open carrying?

You're right of course, but that makes for a crappy argument

No matter how many times I ask dispatch "So what is the guy DOING with the firearm?" (Usually nothing).  It still comes down to this one fact: We get the call: We go on the call.

We will ask questions (sometimes I'll ask what are the favorite loads, etc...) and you will have to answer questions. Time out of your day.

I grew up here, used to open carry when I was a kid, hell we used to sling our AR15's, AR180's (wish I still had that one) etc, and ride motorsickles to our favorite shoot spots. Those days are GONE.

Much as I hate doing it, and wish Mrs Kravitz would mind her own binnis, we have to answer calls for service.

We will soon have 2,000,000 people in this valley, it's big city life; this ain't the same town I grew up in....

Oh and P.S.: Guess where most of our newbie Cops are coming from? Not here.
