Anyone know if it's legal to "open carry" a firearm on private property in North Las Vegas? In other words could I be in my garage holstered up (with the door open) or could I be in the yard with a firearm openly displayed? Note: For those of you guys not from North Vegas we have some of the dumbest and strictest gun laws in Nevada. |

Rich.... I believe if you are on "your" property, legally carrying in a holster, etc that is OK. IN NLV, hit the edge of the road, and could be you might be surrounded. Just my guess though. I think there are afew NLV LEO's on here to really give you the lowdown. John |

Open carry in NLV is legal, but not advised if you dont want to be inconvenienced. You'll more than likely get called on, contacted, and maybe get proned out. People (read: Kalifornians) are stupid and if they call, the only information the police are given is that some maniac with a gun is waving it around, even though the person left it snugly in the holster |

Thanks guys. I must be getting their strict laws in regard to having weapon in a vehicle with open carry. We were all told that technically you can't even have an unloaded weapon in your car however, if you have a plausible story i.e. it's daytime and you say you're going to the range that you'll be fine. Except from Packing.org: "Some cities like North Las Vegas and Boulder City have "Deadly Weapon" laws, and you may be cited or arrested if you pass through their jurisdictions with a gun in the vehicle." The above is what I consider stupid and is out of line with the rest of the state. Just my opinion though. +1 on the CCW trumping NLV law, I've been to class and submitted my Utah paperwork, just need to get down to metro next week for the NV one. |
I'm trying to be polite but...WTF? Like I stated I open carry in NLV alot, I've never had anyone call on me, they usually don't even look at the gun. I've said this 100x here, if you open carry in ANY city don't wear a ragged old concert tee shirt from the 80's you just pulled out of the back of your closet, dress nice and nobody even thinks twice about it. One time about a year ago I had a guy in front of me at Albertsons who had an exposed handgun on his hip, I gently tapped him on the shoulder and asked him if he was a LEO or a citizen just open carrying. This guy freaks out, gets nervous and starts reciting the 2nd Amendment to me and just about giving me the name and number of his lawyer. Just be cool and calm if anyone does ask and act like you just have a cell phone on your hip and you will be fine. We also have talked about the law in NLV where you need a reason to have a gun in your car ie going to the range or whatever, this law is not for US. It is for the fine folks at D street and Bonanza, I've gone through NLV CPAAN and almost every officer I met really could care less about YOU, they just use that law to fuck with the people they see everyday doing stupid shit in the ghetto. I suggest all NLV residents to go through CPAAN, it will open your eyes as to what little NLV police have to work with compared to Metro and what a good job they do with what little they are given by the city commissioners. |
Woffy.... what is CPAAN??? John |
I found this reference: CPAAN |
That's it. CPAAN is the alumi, they do alot of stuff after the little academy though as you can see on that website. They have shoots at the NLVPD range and help the PD as much as possible. Here is the official page with application, fill it out and get in on the next session. It's a blast. www.ci.north-las-vegas.nv.us/Departments/Police/CitizensAcademy.cfm |
I am HIGHLY insulted that you believe in selctive enforcement. How DARE law enforcement just target bad people. The liberals would be soooo mad to hear of such a terrible concept. Everyone should be equally harassed OK, not really. The only times LE should have contact with a good person are: 1) They are a victim or witness 2) They were in an accident 3) They were driving stupid and needed to be told to stop driving stupid There are plenty of turds to consume our time |

Well, I am kinda confused!! What are they an "Alumni" of?? I looked at the website and see they have meetings, and fund raiser events, etc. Membership is $12. Is it like an Auxiliary of NLVPD?? Yeah, saw the shoots they have. Anyway, just curious as to just what they are and what they represent. |
They are folks that have gone through the 12 week course and want to stay together to help NLVPD. |

Wolfpack, How does one open carry while out and about (away from his house) in NLV? i.e. the guy at Albertson's probably didn't walk from his house to the grocery store. What do you think he did with the weapon while in his car? Is it safe to assume that a cop won't bother with it/care if one gets stopped for a traffic infraction/gets involved in an accident? I fully understand the D Street genesis for this law but the law doesn't differentiate between the combat zone area of NLV and the rest of the city. |
Rich, a CCW takes care of what you are talking about. After the guy calmed down he told me he was a CCW instructor at ASS but didn't think the shirt he was wearing would cover his gun good enough and he would print so he just tucked in his shirt. I explained to him I open carry sometimes as well and we both remarked how alot of people think it is a no-go in NLV. I personally know Stephanie Smith and Sheri Buck on the council, they asked the city attorney about open carry and he said it was ok but he didn't think it was a good idea (who cares). I lost the email from him, it's been a few years and I just might pose the question again to him. |
| Rich- To do it legally, you would probably have to lock it up in the trunk and when you get to where you're going get it out and load it. Very gay. Hurry up and turn in your ccw paperwork and you don't have to worry anymore. Metro seems to be kicking out permits faster these days. My renewal only took about 2 months this time vs. 4 months the initial time 5 years ago. |

In Nevada you do not need a permit or other licensure to (openly) carry on your personal property. However, given the crime situation and urbanized mind-set in the Las Vegas Valley in general and North Las Vegas in particular, I am not so sure that carrying a handgun in the open where any member of the general public could see it is a good idea. I can very easily see the circumstances where you are carrying a handgun in the open while in your garage (with the door open). A neighbor or passerby sees you with a handgun, exercised the urbanized mind-set with “aaaaahhhhhh, he’s got a gun, a gun! and calls 911. The police will respond with the accompany big-deal actions, reaction, and related fussing. Because of all of this, I would suggest that if you are going to carry on your property, either excersse caution not to be seen doing so; or better yet, carry your handgun concealed or get your CCW! |
You know you sure do take alot of cheap shots at a place that it's residents can get a CCW in under 60 days and can have ammo sent right to our door. Have fun waiting the FULL 120 days for your permit. As an aside, when I took my little trip last spring up to Reno I would say there are easily more CA plates on the road there than here around Vegas. The only place in the ENTIRE state that still feels like REAL Nevada would be the Ely area. Now let me go order some ammo. |
