Ok, a while back I had talked about getting together some of us and starting a disaster preparedness network, well lets get it started with a dinner to get acquainted and discuss our goals and the intent of the network.

Lets schedule a date after the Holidays -perhaps a Saturday afternoon.
Those of you who are interested post here on some dates you are available.

Thanks

Can you post more details of what you are looking at doing, etc.?  Sounds like a good idea, but I'd like more details before I commit.

I should be there. Day probably doesnt matter but I am off on weekends.

Ok,

In the event of this city being temporarily uninhabitable i.e. Dirty Bomb, Riots (<-they happen from time to time), Pandemic, etc.

-The notion is to have a network of folks who are of a similar mindset who want to take time to plan and ready for a bad day.

This is for both people who want to teach others and for people who want to learn.

Thanks for the info.

I'm interested.  I'd guess that I'm more of a learner type.

Weekends are best for me too because I'm off then, but evenings during the week can work too.

Thanks

In the event you mention this idea to your family and the wife or kids think its a waste of time and if something happens the Govt. will take care of everything. This link below is to a great site that helps a family begin to talk and plan for a bad day. Many of us would find this information elementary in nature but keep in mind most of our wives, mothers, kids, and dogs have never thought about what they would do if the city turned uninhabitable.

There is also the red cross to listen to. When the people who are suppose to help you when this sort of thing happens recommend you do all this stuff you really should listen.

Oh and for the record, I'd be interested in participating.

(in case my ninja outfit is too intimidating, I'll leave it at home)

I won't be wearing any Ninja outfits or other nonsense like that but I am very easily identified in my survival outfit. This is NOT a joking matter folks. You don't think the place that we meet for dinner will mind me in this outfit? This is from last year's Triple 7 Arfcom party. Management told me that I was making the patrons worried but I told them, "rubbish my good man, I am prepared for ANY catastrophe".

BTW, that's my murse I got for Christmas.

Happen to be at the book store yesterday, and picked up a copy of S.W.A.T. (jan/07) for giggles, as never read it before, and there was a nice article on Survival in it.  Basic, but still good info.

Well, it's a good thing I left my small generator up at my place in WA, as my son up there lost power, due to the high winds, and he got out the little generator.  Only 1800 watts, but still enuff to light some bulbs and keep the refrig going.  He had to shiphon gas out of his spare truck, as all gas stations closed up there, as there was no power to pump gas.  I am getting a new Honda generator to replace my noisy 5kw I have now, for use with the RV, and when I go up there this spring, will build a small shed and install it along with a transfer switch, incase this happens again.  Make sure I got my 55gal gas barrel filled also.  Wish I could convert it to PPG, but never found a kit for it, to do that.

Anyone know if CostCo still have the 5 gal bucket of food supplies??

Yes, they had them there last week in Henderson.  Back of the store, near the cleaning supplies and paper goods.

Thanks, 1337G.  That use to be my store, until we moved north.  Got one closer now at N. Decatur and 215, just 1/4 mile from house.  Will check it out next time we go..

just be aware that that bucket ain't got enough calories in it to be a REAL 90 day supply.

30 days is more like it.... and that'd get REALLY boring fast.

store what you use, and use what you store.

...he got out the little generator. Only 1800 watts, but still enuff to light some bulbs and keep the refrig going.

"normal" incandescent bulbs, or compact fluorescent?

CF bulbs will let you have light and leave more juice for things like running the fridge or charging batteries.

charge up a deep cycle battery or two and you can run CF bulbs or LED christmas lights from a small generator at night, without having to run the genny constantly.

get a Kill-a-Watt meter (about $20 if you find one on sale) and you can know exactly how much juice your fridge or any other appliances need... it's not always the same as what's on the label.

almost every bulb in my house is CF, and i have *about* 24 bulbs in the house. if those were traditional 60W buls, that'd be 1440 watts.. almost as much as your little genny puts out.

with 24 CF bulbs, that's about 312 watts, for a savings of over 1KW, with every light in the house blazing.

Wal-Mart has 12 packs of 60W equivalent bulbs for under $10 (unfortunately, they DIDN'T have 'em when i was buying bulbs!)

no need to light candles AND curse the darkness.

Was in the new Costco at 215 and N. Decatur on Saturday--they had the 90 day buckets.

Alright - Holidays are officially over, time to get this project started.

I propose Claim jumpers (over in Boca Park vicinity) as a meeting place to have dinner.

Saturday - Dec 13th looks good (approx. 1900hrs.), post up if this time/date will work for you. If the time/date does not work for you post up and we can work on possibly changing it.

Again this meeting is for people who are serious about forming a network.

Please keep in mind, once the core group members have been established (idiots and/or liability’s = washouts) the  group meetings will consist of many things none of which will include sitting on our asses in our comfortable homes on our computers.

If your interested come on down. We need many people from different walks of life.

Thanks

This sounds like a great idea.  Unfortunatly I am out of town until the 25th I think.  Maybe I can attend a second meeting.  It would be good to talk things over with like minded folks, my wife thinks I'm bonkers.

What are you ready to do?

This will not be anything like a milita or some dress up in camo and look the role deal.

Sorry, I don't really know what I'm ready to do because of my limited knowledge of what the parameters of this whole thing are.

When I first saw the post,  I was thinking it would be cool to come to the dinner and check it out and see if it interested me.  But, I saw the post about only those who are "serious" should attend.

Is is possible after the meeting for you guys to post or email what was decided upon or discussed, and then someone like me can figure out if it's an interest?
