I bought a Ruger .45 Blackhawk with ACP and Colt cylinders. I want to reload heavy .45s but the cylinder is so undersized I couldn't drive a .452 bullet through with a wooden dowel. Increasing pressure in a cylinder with overtight throats is not what I want to do. The accuracy is also not great. Looking for options of either a good LOCAL (in state) smith to ream the cylinder throats to .4525 or anyone with the Brownells .45 cylinder throat reamer and pilots kit I can rent for a couple days. SE WI. I think it is $140 for the set from Brownells, online smiths with good reputation seem to charge about $75 a cylinder and have a 4-5 month wait.
Normally I would say you are right on sending it back. Their customer service is good, but they aren't known for fixing this particular issue. Plus last time I sent in a Ruger revolver it had to go next day air fedex and cost like $67 to ship. I'm fixing this myself one way or another. Tnx though.
I did my own years ago, on a .45LC Blackhawk, when I began reloading "hot" loads for deer hunting. I was loading 300gr hard cast, at 1200fps. I saw an article in Guns & Ammo about throat clearances on Rugers in .45LC, and how to "open" it up a bit for safety on hot loads. Not difficult at all. I just used a brand new 29/64th drill bit turned through each throat a few times, by hand. 29/64th = .4531". Worked great. For .45LC cylinder only, not .45acp!
