Hi guys, neighbor from the south here. Girlfriend and I would like to come up and do some some day hiking. I'm currently recovering from shoulder surgery, so no climbing or hoisting.
We were considering Kettle Moraine, any pros or cons? I'm open to other locations as well.
We'll be coming up from the western suburbs of Chicago and would also be looking for accommodations for the night, decent place for dinner etc.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations and advice.

Devils Lake is actually on our list, would you recommend it over Kettle Moraine?

The hike on the bluffs around Devils lake is worth the extra time in the car. I would do this one first.
The north and south kettles are mostly flat with some rolling hills.
Pike lake and Lapham Peak are nice parks that have a fire tower for some good views. Each have a few miles of wooded hiking.
The Zillmer trail has more longer trails.

I was talking to my physical therapist today and he strongly recommended Devils Lake too.
Thanks for the advice, guys. It's very much appreciated!

Check out the ICE AGE Hiking trail.  It runs from green bay south down past white water and then north again towards Devils lake and then on to MN.

Ice Age Trail  ----->   http://www.iceagetrail.org/

I've done about 2/3 of it (not in one shot) and my goal is to finish the whole thing.

The Ice Age around the Holy Hill area is nice.  Last summer a buddy and I backpacked a 12 mile segment starting at Holy Hill and went to Pike Lake.  They have camp sites that are right on the lake with restrooms and grills, or you can ask for a camp site for backpackers and its a lot more secluded with no amenities.  For dinner in that area you have some options, Fox and Hounds, Alpine Retreat ( I'd go here), Mineshaft, Casa Tequila, etc...

Thanks again for the replies. Will most likely be heading up to Devils Lake in a few weeks.
Ice age trail sounds like something worth checking out later in the summer.
Due you shoulder surgery, Ive been sedentary since since February, I've only recently started getting out and about.
Anyone have first hand experience with Governor Dodge?

They're all good trails.  The downside to Devils Lake is it's really popular (crowded).  The KM / IAT are better if you're looking for more solitude on your hike.

Gov Dodge has a nice trail around at least one of the lakes. There is another short trail that goes to a waterfall that is worth a look too. Gov Dodge is a fairly large park that is spread out. You should be able to combine several loops for a decent hike. I heard there is a small cave there but I've never seen it.

Governor Dodge was another that was recommended by my physical therapist. Sounds like it would be worth checking out, Thanks much for the reply
