| Hello Cheeseheads (from a former Cheesehead)! I have a question about carrying in your vehicle in WI. It seems as though a handgun can be carried loaded in a vehicle as long as it is in plain view. If I am out side of my vehicle and decide not to open carry, can I unload my handgun and put in my center counsel? A center counsel is considered a legal carrying device (with an unloaded firearm) in IL. Should I bring a case just in case? (see what I did there?) |
| If you drive within 333 yards of a 1-12 Grade School, you must have the firearm unloaded and in a case. The console and glove box are not a case here in WI. The console and glove box storage is also arguably concealing the firearm which only a licensee may do. You are not a Licensee unless you have a non-resident CCL which is recognized by WI. |

Can you cite a statute number for the "333 yard rule"? FWIW you can open carry within the 1000 foot buffer zone of a school as long as you are a CCW holder. School property is a whole different animal however. |

333 yards = 1000 feet... LOL!! It's early yet and I need more coffee. FWIW.......if you are a CCW holder you may openly keep your handgun loaded and exposed as you travel through the 333 yard/1000 foots school zone. The gun could be on you open in a holster or simply laying next to you on the front seat like my AR pistol usually is. |

If you decide to open carry in a vehicle without a permit, it is advisable to keep it "in plain view" from someone outside the vehicle. Most have interpreted this to mean at or above the window line on the dash.
As another poster pointed out, though probably legal, you may come across an LEO those feels otherwise. |
