The trail camera pictures look right if they're form Wisconsin. I'd like to see the video from south of Manty. I've always said that 99% of the sightings of "cougars" in WI are cases of mistaken identity. I would have said that too, had it not been for the tracked one a few years back that made it down to Chicago before it was shot. Look at the tracking of it along with the sightings. And this....from a guy who worked for six years on PA's Black bear program with Gary Alt. Manitowoc area has some very good riparian zones around rivers and streams that make great wildlife corridors. There could be movement of a lot of different species if they decided to do so and stayed somewhat stealthy about it. I'd love to see that video too. I'm just west of Manitowoc. |
| I have no doubt there are some cougars in the state and that there have been cougars moving in and out of the state for years. But I don't think there's any breeding population of them in the state. I live in Manty and remember the black cougar that was seen just west of the airport about 20 years ago. Ol Sid Herman wrote about it in the paper and people would drive around the area looking for it every night. What it realy was was a black lab named Satie that would walk around the woods every couple nights. |
| About 5 yrs ago my Wife came and was talking about animal tracks in the snow. One she could not identify. Her Dads was a trapper and he taught her animal tracks. I printed up a bunch of Wisconsin animal tracks and through a cougar track in the pile. She picked it out right away as one she saw about a 1/2 mile from the house. about 3 years latter a neighbor saw what he could only describe as a cougar heading up to the woods from the river about 1/4 mile from the house. Last winter my wife came in and said go look at the tracks in the drive way. 2 tracks were cougar one of them was directly over a deer track. |
| I've seen their tracks a few times in the snow while deer / coyote / grouse hunting in the Nicolet, and also on the sand beach of a local lake in the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest, while duck hunting. A buddy had one stalking his turkey decoys just before sunrise, a few springs ago, near Sayner. He tried taking a cell-phone pic, but it was still too dark to see much. |

I had a friend of mine get a picture of a cougar on a game cam just west of Manitowoc about 10 years ago. I'll shoot him an email and ask if he still has it. |

I didn't know that - cool though. Actually Sid is not the new cougar, they just got another new one last Thursday, I believe it's name is Abby. My neighbor is the zoo keeper and she came over today with pictures of the new "kitten". I'm also now in charger of getting some deer femors and scraps for them. |

| That would be awesome. That riparian zone of the branch and along the Manitowoc river is pretty large. When you canoe the river in spring. The last 40 minutes are actually in the town limits and you'd never know it. It's a great buffer zone and I've seen some great wildlife over the years on that river. Same with Silver Creek. |

We've had cougar attacks on domestic animals here on occasion. The last series was a couple of years ago with folks losing a couple of beef calves,a young horse and a judge's llama had a nasty bite taken out of it. The animal survived.
The DNR confirmed it was a cougar attack. The driftless area has a lot of nice hills and cover and caverns for the big cats apparently. I would guess the wolves have something to do with the cats moving south? |
