So I was at the mall in appleton the other day and I attempted to open up ar15.com on my phone. Low and behold, the mall's wifi blocked access to ar15.com. Thought that was a little rediculous.

It's a general filter for guns and weapons.  Not hard to get around.  Just a checkmark on the proxy policy.

I figured that much but really why would you need to block guns and weapons.

You already know the answer.

I'd be curious to see the list of websites they block.  Wonder if there's any other topic/website that would make you go

Kind of odd. Especially since there's a pretty good sized Scheel's in the mall.

Just a feel good filter that costs them nothing to block.  My church does the same thing.

IT Guy: Do you want to block access to sights with violence and weapons?

Management: That sounds like a good thing.

IT Guy: Ok

Yep, it's nothing personal. Our firewall at work is automated to pick up keywords and automatically assign sites to categories; there's absolutely no way in hell I have time to manually research and allow/block every website that exists on the internet. It's easier to have it automated and fix anomalies as needed. For example, occasionally seemingly innocuous  ranges will have their sites blocked under 'violence', and it's easy to unblock them when you find them.

Basically what I'm saying is the mall probably doesn't have any on-site IT gun guys or it'd be unblocked.
