I'm thinking about rebarreling my Rem 700 .223 to .308 and I'm looking for a good smith here in Wisconsin.

That's not just a simple rebarrel..  Unless you are committed to a custom gun, you'd be better off to sell the .223 and buy a .308

Otherwise, call Randy Gregory in Medford.

I reckon many of the premier barrel makers are located right here in WI, some of them offer on site rebarreling (and other services) if I remember correctly.

You'd need to open up the bolt face (378 bolt face to a .473) as well as do something with a new extractor and most likely mess with the "magazine lips".

As a gunsmith it's a good money making project.

I'd be surprised if it's possible.

The .223 action is listed as a Small 700 SA Receiver (part F27347) and the .308 as a Standard 700 SA Receiver (part F27553) at Brownells.  I'd have nothing to do with taking a receiver meant for one caliber and packing twice the powder and three times the bullet weight into it.
