Hey all,

I just got my 80% lower and I am planning on finishing it with a drill press. I am hoping on getting it engraved on the side with a custom logo and text. It's anodized (won't do that again) and I've heard that's pretty hard to engrave without a laser. SO… does anyone know of anywhere that would be able to laser engrave a logo on an AR15 lower. I am hoping to finish it first than get it engraved, but if not I could always wait if need be.

Feel free to shoot me an email at [email protected]

Thanks ahead of time,
Drew

You don't require a laser to engrave anodized aluminum.  It can certainly be done that way and may even be desirable depending on exactly what kind of graphic you want, but mechanical engraving is also an option.

So at this point anyone can decorate a paper weight, but after machining you'll need some type of FFL to modify the firearm, right?  i.e. timing of this engraving may affect who can do this.  Is that how this works?

Possibly, but i mean its the same idea as you could have some one paint it and that doesn't require an ffl as long as it's in state. I would think engraving a graphic wouldn't either as they aren't manufacturing or anything like that.

But i would be happy to wait to finish it. Ive tried talking to a few places but they said they don't like working with anodized Al as it chips sometimes. Just looking for a wisconsin place that is friendly to firearms and preferably does laser engraving.

I had my SBR done at orion arms in the cities.  I was pleased with the service and I recall turnaround being relatively fast.

They are an FFL.  There is no paperwork on your end.

You are looking for these guys.

http://identmarking.com/

They are doing the SBR engraving on my lower.  They come HIGHLY recommended by many other guys that I trust on another forum.  The armorer at my LGS is also doing an SBR build, and is sending his lower there.

Also, they can engrave a completed lower without any type of transfer.  According to the ATF, the work is considered a repair, which does not require a transfer or FFL to ship.  Just put it in a box, ship it to them with signature requested, and when it's done, they ship it back the same way.  Feel free to give them a call, they are very helpful on the phone (I called to discuss placement of my trust info because I have a billet lower with an integrated triggerguard).

Another endorsement for Orion Arms. I sent my SBR lower to them for simple word engraving and it looks like factory markings. They do custom logos too. My engraving cost about $60 and I assume a custom logo would be more, but it's worth it for the quality they do. I couldn't find anyone in WI either.

Doesn't require anything special to ship it to them since they are a FFL. Just toss the receiver in a box, and ship it UPS to the address they have on their site. They engrave it, and ship it back to your house in a few weeks.
