I was pretty active in Kentucky's forum area when I was at Ft Knox. One thing that I've quickly learned is that there are virtually no comparable ranges to the ones in Kentucky up here... kind of dissapointed. Anyways, deer hunting is about to start and I really want to make sure my AR is spot on before next weekend, where around Milwaukee should I go? I'd like 100-200m distances...at least 50m. Thanks guys.

You just missed out on the public deer sight event at RCLRC.  I'm not familiar with any of the other ranges in the area, hopefully someone else can point you in the right direction.

What are you looking for in a range?

Racine County Line mentioned above is as good as any range in general you are use to in KY but it is members only.  To sight in this week head west to McMillers.  Open to the public and covered positions.  All the info is on their web site.

Coming here from FT lewis was hard for me too (range wise) Shiocton has a 500yd public range, which is likely where I will be going to shoot my carbines and rifles.

What features did the ranges have down there?  There are quite a few ranges in WI, several have 200 yards and a few have 500+ yards.

Have you never watched Deliverance?

He is talking Knob Creek for one.  It is not that special but it goes long, has covered positions and lots of them, you can shoot anything you own, you can camp, you can shoot dildos filled with tannerite, and cars, vans, boats and refrigerators to name a few.  Imagine Libertarians with guns and a range of their own and the Management was customer focused.  That is a typical KY range.

Knob Creek aside,  and unregulated shooting into the air aside,  Really, what is missing in WI ranges specifically?   We don't have mountains as backstops in our State.    I don't see making sure that every round impacts the berm as a negative with formal ranges.  I would like to hear from the OP as to what specifically he is looking for in a range.

Nothing. Racine County is nicer than Knob Creek IMHO, especially if you are a multi-discipline shooter.  McMillers is nice and has great practice areas for clays and a decent clays course.  Wisconsin is just a big place and you people hide stuff really well.  He is spoiled.  When I lived in Indy I drove 2 hours south to shoot at a private club still in Indiana but not far from Louisville, that went 500 and had a lot to offer, but again RCLRC is nicer than that club too, just busier.

It is just perception.  where Ky shines is 50 cal and blowing shit up with a lot of Bourbon readily available and warmer winter temps for shooting.  Their frozen nuts shoots ain't shit compared to y'alls!  At best they are just a bit slushy but not truly frozen.

There are WI ranges which allow .50, but few that can tolerate shooting in the air which goes along with shooting vehicles, etc.   How many times a year are people wanting to blow shit up?  I have no objections to driving a couple of times per year for the spray and pray blow shit up shoots and have "safe"  local ranges to train on the remainder of the year.  Even Knob Creek has rules.

I went for the $5 "sight it in myself" method.  Why would I want some "expert" to sight it in?  Problems I had with the whole ordeal:

  • Got there right away and pulled rifles out trunk (still cased).  Walked all the way down to thing only to be told that they must be uncased.

  • Go back to car, uncase rifles and head back.  Wait in rain for 20+ mins for the one spot they have open.

  • Finally get to spot - each of the 4 targets had the better part of 25 holes punched in each - most with the bullseye poked out.

  • Couldn't tell where new impacts were because of the crappy targets they were using - black target area on a darkened brown paper.

  • Fine - I'll grab my spotting scope out of my car.  Told if I leave line I'll have to get back at the end.  They'll grab me a spotting scope to use.

  • Spotting scope they hand me could barely see 50yds and fogged up from the rain.  Make case again to go get mine since no one in line.  He says fine - hurry up.

  • Get muzzle swept by about 5 guys wandering around in the parking lot which is always comforting.

  • Get to car, grab spotting scope, guy in parking lot 3 cars down launches what had to of been a 30-06 round in the dirt about 5 ft in front of him.  They quickly jump around and look to see who was around that witnessed it.  Another guy and I were the only ones around.

  • I place spotting scope back in car, guy across the way yells at the moron, I go back to grab rifle, pack up and head out to come home and detail strip it to get all the water out and reoil it.

  • I have friends and coworkers that are members there and wouldn't hesitate going back there with them when they aren't doing this but I'll definitely pass on this event from here on out.

Trip to McMiller Sunday morning was great - even with the rain and the storms.  In a nice covered area, easily saw my targets without a spotting scope and made sure that the .308 and 6.8 were on ( I knew they would be but I always want to make sure before I head out into the woods).  Also played around with the .17HMR I just picked up.  No drama, no ND's, no bs, stayed dry and could even see what I was hitting.  Plus I came home with a pile of 30-06 brass that my Garand will love to be fed.

Wow. How do you sight in on someone else's target full of holes?

At Schultz's sight in clinic weekends, we make them uncase on the shooting benches, and the gun in the case itself has to be downrange, if the case is backwards, we have them close it and turn it around, then uncase. Re-casing is the same way, at the bench, only when the range is hot, and it's pointed down range at all times until the zipper or the latches are closed.

Everyone gets their own target, and can change it. We have a selection of colors and styles for contrast or bring your own.  We have members/RO's with a line of spotting scopes behind the 100 yard benches helping with calling shots, or the shooters can use their own spotter at the bench.  Or we just use binoculars for a bit of magnification at the 25 yard 2'x4' piece of cardboard we put up for the people just starting out with bore-sighting.  We'd only ever kick someone off a bench if the line for shooters was really deep and I haven't seen that happen in the past two years I've helped out at sight-in clinic. We call range hot for 10 minutes at a time to keep things moving and let people change targets.

If anything, our sight in clinics are a PITA because of too much safety. Probably seems really anal, but we make everyone, members/staff and hunters use a check-in/check-out board with painted washers for firing line and down range to make sure everyone comes back from hanging targets and isn't goofing around behind a berm or something when the line goes hot. Kind of like the check-in tags coal miners use.

Things get dicey with a bunch of unknown shooters and people who only handle firearms once or twice a year on your firing line, one hole in some hunter, or worse, his kid, or a round off the property, and our club could go the way of Delafield. We're taking a bit of a risk to get their $10.

We only have two smallish shelters, but we're working on covering the whole line.

We did have a (single?) mother and her 10 year old son come out and want to try shooting a bead sighted Rem 870 with slugs at 25 yards. She was pumping it while pointing up in the air out of recoil with her finger on the trigger and put a nice hole in the sky baffle 7 feet over her head at the firing line.  One of the members who is also an NRA instructor was on her like white-on-rice after that.

Other than that, it was actually pretty calm this year as far as asshattery goes. It was a pretty good group of hunters.  I did feel bad for two guys with absolute crap optics setups.  One had a WASR with ATI plastic furniture and an "optics rail" in the plastic upper handguard over the gas tube that didn't mount to anything else. Another had an SKS with the receiver cover mount that had visible play when you wiggled it. Both guys were very nice and receptive though when I pointed out why it would never work past 25 yards, if that.

Re: lips' issues

Half of those could happen anywhere, since there isn't usually stagf in parking lots.  As to some of the other issues, it could jyst need refinement.  Ie; rclrc used to have encased problems until people and signs were posted to direct shooters.  Did you let any of the staff know about the problems you had?  Thats how i would figure places can improve.

Sorry about taking so long to get back to this. I was having trouble finding any open to the public outdoor ranges. I ended up going with some family to Daniel Boone, and god I was disappointed. First of all, having some "Pro" sight in my rifle seemed extra ridiculous to me, so I asked to do it myself. The look I got back was pretty much summed up as "You don't want our Pro's to sight in your rifle? Who do you think you are?". So I ultimately paid $5 to fire 5 rounds. In KY there were 3 outdoor ranges I could go to and spend about 7 to shoot whatever I wanted for as long as I wanted, in any way I wanted. So yea, that's the difference. Don't get butthurt about talking crap about SE Wisconsin, I grew up here.
