So I want to plan a trip to Wisconsin this fall...I ordered the Wisconsin Travel guides but wanted to here what you guys think.
What are some of the best scenic spots to go hiking in Wisconsin....Doesnt really matter what part of the state just want some input. Looking for some of the best Rustic Roads too, would be great if they where dirt/gravel roads. Thanks |

Are you looking to do anything or just see scenic stuff?
A drive in the Kettles is really nice. I did a couple of hundred miles in the targa (and got sunburned) two weeks ago. |

The only thing I would be doing is hiking....nothing big...I do love scenic roads and such. I never heard of Kettles...going to check that out. Thanks. |

Check out the Ice Age Trail. I usually spend at least 3-4days a month on it.

Drive teh Kettle MOraine scenic trail, from whitewater to elkhart lake.
Devils Lake for hiking Ice age trail for hiking. Many hiking trails in kettle moraine state forests. For scenic drives, you can also just follow any alphabet road in Sauk county. Google map Ontario WI or Wildcat Mt., and you'll see teh area. Also, is a biking trail, but teh Elroy-Sparta trail is nice too. As far as gravel road route, not too much of that in WI. However, if you want to drive up to NIcolet Nat'l forest, lots of trails, atv routes, hiking, etc. |

Copper Falls is a beautiful area, but very out of the way. The Kettle Moraine area is very nice for hiking, but lots of ups and downs! I second the Ice Age Trail - it was fantastic back in my Boy Scouting days. And if you decide to hit Copper Falls, Timms Hill is on the way and then you can bump up to Ashland on Hwy 13 after the Falls. We more or less live between Copper Falls and Timms hill and there is no shortage of scenic roads, trails and parks up here. If you have a good map and want to see forest drive the roads that run from Phillips to Hazelhurst and I don't mean hwy 8 or 70. If you want to wander the Forest hit the grouse hunter trails in Price County. |

Here is a map with most of the state's hiking trails. Zoom in twice (two clicks) where ever you are interested in, and the trails will pop up. http://www.trails.com/trailfinder/browsebymap/?statecode=37.64&lat=43.7844397&lon=-88.7878678&z=7&m=terrain&a=HK |

I hear door county in the fall is nice, haven't had the opportunity or time to get there in the fall yet. I absolutely love Door County in fall. The colors are awesome and the weather (IMO) is perfect. Fall Fest up in Sister Bay is a great time, put your drinking boots on for it though. Thinking about it makes me homesick OP - If you're interested in camping in DoCo, check out Egg Harbor Campground. It's a really nice place and the owners are great people. I worked there for 5 summers during college, so I'm a bit bias but it really is a great place.

Lots of good suggestions.
My favorite parts of the state are; Anywhere near the Mississippi, the west, especially the northwest, anywhere on Lake Superior? Michigan, the north east, anywhere near the UP of MI. You should get a Wisconsin Gazetteer, they are under $20 still I think. Best overall map of the state IMHO. (tons of info right on the map for hiking/fishing/camping/forest/state parks all that good stuff) We don't mind people from IL coming up, just so long as they don't drive like an asshole, be rude, and don't throw garbage around, it's all good (not saying you would do these things, just sayin') Chequamegon/Nicolet is a pretty big forest area too. (and ,yes,Devils Lake would be a great spot to see along the way, it is awesome, Governor Dodge SP by Dodgeville is nice too if you do the SP thing) Enjoy your trip, don't forget to bring beer and cheese back with you. |

Devils Lake area. This. Devil's Lake State Park is near Baraboo. Also Door County, Wisconsin River (start in Sauk City, canoe toward Mississippi), and Wyalusing State Park for starters. Other than Door County, these are all in South Central to South Western Wisconsin. There are also great sites to see on the northern boundaries. |
but it really is a great place.
