IIRC, Madison won't allow you to have firearm businesses in town. The last in town gun shop closed not to long ago.

Madison is a little bubble of libtards.

What kind of specific services can you offer? Anything is probably fine, but I like to see shops that offer refinishing services, AR work (builds, parts installation)

As they say up north... Madison is 50 square miles surrounded by reality.

Madison has its colorful characters, and some *very* liberal people.  It also has some great arfcomers.

I'd like it if someone with outstanding metalworking talent was in town.  Spraying paint and parts installation requires careful attention to detail, but isn't that hard--if even I can do it, I feel pretty safe saying that.    Someone with genuine metal skills would be great.  It kills me to pay $25 per hole for a basic drill & tap, or prices charged for basic shotgun or choke work.  And when you start looking at bolt handles on a family heirloom, or metal checkering, or engraving, it would be nice to have great local talent.

Good luck and enjoy Madison!

Be aware you'll be competing with established smiths for the savvy customers and with Gander Mountain Service Center for the numb nuts customers.  Good luck.

If you're coming to Madison I'd recommend one of the surrounding communities like McFarland or Deforest or Waunakee instead of the city itself.

Stoughton is 15-20 minutes south of Madison.
Local gun shop closed (High Caliber sports, no surprise they did). There is a gun club in town that has several hundred members. A few empty buildings in town also that could be idea for a small business.

And maybe I'll apply for a part time job with ya

Seems like I might have to set up shop right outside of town which isnt a big deal for me. But I am looking at doing everything from metal work(full machine shop services), custom rifles, stocking parts for AR's, glocks, 1911's M&Ps, ect.. , Finishing work from sera coating to all the different bluing and more, repair/cleaning, custom barrels turned from blanks, and pretty much be a all inclusive shop. And if I can get the space look into doing classes for CCW, self defense, NRA, ECT...

I would also like to offer my own line of hunting rifles with you choice of caliber like 7mm, .338, .308, .30-06. 270, ect... Probably a custom AR package, Custom 1911 builds, I am working on a custom rifle revolver made form a S&W 686 that would shoot 357 and .38 and not feel like a cheap rossi. kinda like a colt 1855 but modernized. a brush gun so to speak.

As for the one guy who said he had to pay $25 a hole to drill and tap, I would probably offer a hourly rate you could pay or a single upfront cost and you could chose what you wanted to pay. so if it only takes me 15 min to do the drill and tap you could pay for 1 hours worth of work and get your gun professionally cleaned for the same amount of money you would be spending anyways. or put it towards some other work you would want done. Try to give people options on how they want to move along with their individual gun projects, and how they chose to pay for them.

So just some ideas of what I would be doing if I head to the area. But open to hear what else you guys have to say

also ill throw up a pic or 2 of some projects. Nothing super fancy just some stuff in progress

First if a Brazilian mauser action that has a custom 20 inch barrel thats going to have a break on the end eventually, with a 2 1/2 contour chambered in .30-06. its going to be a scout gun. going to put on a new bolt handle, trigger, custom stock, and a few other goodies. you can also see where i welded up some of the pitting.

Next is a trapper pistol i custom made for my girlfriend she wanted it in red white and blue for a costume she wants to wear. It is fully functional and it came out pretty decent. I sitll have some touch ups to do and I might do another one with some custom brass work on the sides of the handle.

WCI was looking for someone to sue Madison over this (no handgun sales in Madison), since their law would technically violate the state pre-emption. They tried to get MC sports to join them in a lawsuit after MC got annexed by the city, but no dice.

You should set up closer to Milwaukee.

Then you could hang out with me all day

The question is, are they prohibiting the "sale, purchase, purchase delay, transfer, ownership, use, keeping, possession, bearing, transportation, licensing, permitting, registration or taxation of any firearm or part of a firearm, including ammunition and reloader components", or are they creating a zoning regulation that restricts the type of business in certain areas? The sale, purchase, etc of firearms can be perfectly legal, and they can also pass zoning laws restricting the type of business in the area, AFAIK.

I'm no lawyer. I think it's stupid. But I have a feeling that this may actually be legal. Sane or rational, no. Lawful? possibly......through mental gymnastics.

MC Sports is run by raging liberals. Their policies are anti-gun.  The Open Carry people worked on them a while and gave up.

Fuck them, I don't go there anymore. (Their prices sucked ass last time I went too, and the store is always a stinky mess.)

Zoning...they are using that to effectively make a de facto ban.  Thing is nobody want's to bother fightiing city hall when you can just set up shop just outside of town.

Glad to see you're into quality rifles.  You'll find some of the finest barrel makers within an hour's drive - Krieger, Mike Rock, Bartlein, Brux just to name a few.  I for one would like someone local who does engraving for my Form 1s.

THe MC store in question is probably going to have to end up closing because most of there sales where from firearms that they arent selling anymore, the store doesnt get any new stuff, its being run as a clearance store

Other than a few good restaurants and good bike paths, I try to stay away from Madison as much as possible.
