| Hello all! I recently was accepted for a job in lacrosse Wisconsin and want to find out about the local NFA laws. I have a couple sbrs and cans to bring and hopefully can purchase an m11/9 once I get settled. Any thing other than normal ATF hoops I'm used to in Kentucky? |

You're good to go.
The one sticking point is that a recent re-interpretation by the ATF of WI law on MG's you have to get a letter of authorization from your CLEO above and beyond the signature on your Form 1 or Form 4, whether or not you use a trust, or a corp. to do the NFA registration. |

So just an additional later in addition to the regular CLEO sign off? Are sheriffs amenable to this? It varies from county to county. I'm in the Milwaukee metro, where the answer ranges from "No", to "Very grudging if you point out you can just go the trust route". Hopefully others will fill you in about the area you're moving to.
I haven't gone for an MG yet, the $6000 that even the most basic pre '86 F/A stuff costs now is out of reach for me. Nor could I afford the ammo to feed it anyway. I'm more of a Suppressor, SBR/SBS, DD type of guy, I use a trust, and as such haven't had to ask for such a letter. |

Yeah 6k is a little high for a m11. Last one I saw around here was around 3500-4k. I guess you're right. I was looking at some of the other "cheap" guns like S&W 76's some of the less desireable UZI conversions, and stuff like M2 carbines. The one MAC I looked at on Sturmgewehr was a two-stamp sale, had a Gemtech can too. So yeah, I guess the "basement" is still around $3500 or so. Might as well still be $6000 to me though.

Yup. Hopefully it will be my graduation present. Finishing med school and starting surgery residency in July. I can't wait. Been in school for 20 years now. That's too long. |

Keep in mind, that's relevant to pistol cal. MG's. If you were to buy a Maremont M60, no additional letter. I am not a lawyer, and don't play one on TV. This is just advice. I beleive you may be incorrect. Then again, the whole ruling is incorrect, and not consistent with law as written. The "CLEO" approval they are talking about is in 941.26(3) Basically..." This section does not apply to the sale, possession, modification, use or transportation of weapons under sub. (1) (a) or (1m) to or by any person duly authorized by the chief of police of any city or the sheriff of any county. 941.27 is where the whole pistol caliber argument comes in to play. 941.27 basically exempts just about everything from 941.26. "941.27(2) Exceptions. Sections 941.25 and 941.26 shall not prohibit or interfere with the manufacture for, and sale of, machine guns to the military forces or the peace officers of the United States or of any political subdivision thereof, or the transportation required for that purpose; the possession of a machine gun for scientific purpose, or the possession of a machine gun not usable as a weapon and possessed as a curiosity, ornament or keepsake; or the possession of a machine gun other than one adapted to use pistol cartridges for a purpose manifestly not aggressive or offensive. |

I'm in La Crosse too. Check out smithcustomguns.com, he's an NFA dealer in La Crosse and should be able to answer your questions. Perfect! I hate to give up all my NFA contacts in Louisville but I'm glad there's someone close. Hopefully my next cans will be a spectre 2 and octane 45. I just sent a beretta 21a to tornado tech to get threaded and want a new can to put on it. NFA is definitely a sickness. And I'm always up for a 3 gun match. Not too many around my current area. Although the machine gun shoot is a big plus. |
