The wife and I have a rare date night this Saturday (FIL is visiting and offered to babysit).  This is extremely rare and when thinking about it we realized we have no frickin' clue where/what to do to take advantage of this opportunity.  The wife suggested "We could shoot some guns".

So for a Saturday night date, where to shoot?  Is GM's range busy, reservation only on a Saturday evening?  We've done the virtual range once, but I'd like to shoot some live ammo (sadly...it's been awhile).  Panic buying still happening?...odds they'll have 40 S&W target ammo?

There is very little ammo on shelves.  What's there is expensive.

Do you need to shoot indoors?  McMillers is open Saturdays during the day.  Yellowstone is as well.  Both are about an hour's drive from Madison. (In opposite directions.)

There's always the indoor range at Gander Mountain. Never been there personally, but talked to a few who have.

I'd suggest you reserve gander mountain if you decide to head there.  Otherwise there's also deerfield range..like others said whatever ammo is left at gander will be expensive.  Mcsports had quite a few .40 but I forgot how much it was..definitely cheaper than GM.

I'd head up to Deerfield Pistol and Archery before going back to Gander.  You may want to call before you go as they get busy on the weekends.

I believe Deerfield just remodeled the store and renovated the range, but I haven't been in to check it out yet.

I do think Gander has better (and more fair) range pricing if you're not going alone: $25/hr per range stall no matter how many people share, compared to $15/hr per person at Deerfield, even if sharing a stall.

Deerfield added more showroom space but the range looks the same to me.

Ah -- I haven't been there for a while, but was just going off the text messages I get from them...on Jan 27, they sent a text:

"We will be closed on Tuesday 1-29-13 from 9a-9p for range renovations"

Then you are correct, I have not been there for a month or so.  I don't know how much they would be doing in one day though.

Talked with they guys at Dpac/Deerfield Pistol and Archery tonight.  They don't do reservations 1st come 1st served.  average wait when they are busy is 30 min, can be up to an hour.  I's suggest calling before hand.

Milford Hills has a out door rifle and pistol range open to everyone. 50 tables covered 3 sides, it's really nice.

Thanks.  I just looked them up, about 45 minutes from me.  I really need a place to shoot rifles besides Yellowstone.

Nice looking club That's only 20 minutes or so away. I'll have to join my club is only 100 yards. I'd love to shoot at 200 and 600 yards.

Do you know if they allow members who have been briefed on range safety to shoot without a RSO present? Thats the biggest problem I see with North Bristol Sportsmans Club. The range is only open two days a week, except by appointment.

There's also circus city sportsman club out I baraboo.  $30 per year, no range intro stuff u gotta attend.  Padlock, so u get a key.  Pistol range and out to 200 yard rifle.  It's a little drive but it's really nice.  Also each member gets a guest.

Once you've read the Range Rules & such. Understand and agree to abide by them, and present your self to the board on the 3rd wednesday of any month, you can shoot all by yourself on the pistol (25 yards), archery or rifle range (200 yds).Ranges are open from 8am to dusk every day

The only time you are required to have an RSO present is when you are on the Upper Range (600 yard) which will be opening for Hi Power? events this summer.
Eventually, there will be concrete tubes to shoot through at other range distances and then the RSO will not be required for that either.

My wife and I are members of the Stoughton Conservation Club (www.stoughtoncc.com/). We even took one of her coworkers there today so he could try the place out.

We'd be happy to invite you as our guests someday if you'd like to give it a try.
