Question: Where was Adrian Peterson?

Answer: Try looking under BJ Raji, Erik Walden, and Charles Woodson.

No offense to Adrian Peterson. I'm a Packer fan, and a football fan in general, and readily admit he is the best RB in the game, bar none. This season's MVP for sure. But he cannot win all the games by himself. He's the only reason the Vikings won 10 games... heck, he's the only reason they won a game at all. Without him, they'd be 2-14 (they'd still beat the Bears ) .

Agreed. He definitely suffers from Barry Sanders syndrome - fantastic running back surrounded by a crap team.

I've decided I'm a bears fan too.

I just started watching Football again.  But my Dad's side of the family is all from Illinois.  There's not much to like about that state, but IMHO, Walther Payton was one of the best running backs I've ever seen.  Not the only great one, but I saw enough of him that I enjoyed.  So.......  It's probably the wrong team to pull for, but I have a terrible habit of being a non conformist.  I get tired of everyone talking about the Packers.  So I can be the voice of dissension.

I don't mind watching the Packers though.

And by the way, I think that one touchdown last night.  The one short pass, I think the Packer guy pushed off.  Isn't that what you were talking about before FMD?    I forget which Packer it was, but he ran downfield into endzone, cut and as he cut he totally pushed off on the defender.  I never understood if that should be a penalty or not.  It was before the ball was in the air though.  I think.  So I don't know if that makes it OK.  What says you all?

Are you sure? There was only one passing touchdown from the Pack yesterday, and Kuhn caught it on the 5 yard line after blocking as a fullback.  He ran it in from there like a fullback, complete with the helicopter spin from the hit on the goal line.

There were several incomplete pass attempts in the endzone, and there was one where I saw where the receiver could have been called  a push-off (which should be OPI penalty).  Then again, there was plenty of holding / defensive pass interference on the other attempts, most notably to Findley (I think).  I guess it all comes down to how (and if) the ref sees it.

ETA: You can still be a Packers fan and recognize talent.  Celebrate it even. Sweetness was one of the best (maybe even THE best) to ever wear any uniform, and Brian's Song is one of the best sports movies ever.  It doesn't change the fact that the Bears (still) suck.

Giving credit where it's due... Bears have had some great players. IMO, Payton is still the best RB in NFL history. He'd run right through tacklers, like AP does today, and they'd get hit harder than they'd hit him. Gale Sayers was probably amongst the 3 most "elusive" RBs ever (along with OJ and Barry Sanders). Dick Butkus, amongst the best LB to ever play the game, was feared by opponants more than any other defensive player in NFL history, until Reggie White came along. That Buddy Ryan '46' defense of the 85 Bears is still the best "D" ever, IMO.

However.... "Great Chicago Bears' QBs" is still the smallest book in the library. Two pages.... "Pluto" and "50 cents", and they're only there so it's not just blank pages.

Well, now my memory maybe is going.  I know which one you're talking about, and that's not the one I'm thinking of.  Hmmmm.......  (the reception play I was talking about)

I have Brian's Song in my que on netflix.  I've never watched it.  I read the book a LONG time ago and I remember being touched.  (crying like a baby, I think).  There are two version though.  One is newer.  You're probably talking about the older one, eh?

Yeah, I enjoyed watching the Packers beat the Vikings.  It was a good game.  That one drive where they completed like 3 pretty decent passes right in a row was pretty sweet.

Yeah, I never liked oh what was his name, Jim or that guy that wore the Oakleys and spiked his hair.  On that same 85 team you're talking about.  Jim..  Was it Jim?  Anyways.  Yeah, Singletary, and those guys.  Remember "Refrigerator Perry"?  LOL.

I think Jim Brown was a great Running Back and Franco Harris.  I'm sure there are more, but Walter was always my favorite.  He just kept going.  And he wasn't super huge.

Perry wasn't the only "star" on that defense. He had a good D-line next to him, with Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael, and Richard Dent. Behind that was Mike Singletary, Otis Wilson, and Wilbur Marshall at LB. Gary Fencik & Dave Duerson & Shaun Gayle at safety, Leslie Frazier (now Vikings head coach) and Mike Richardson at CB. As a group, they were pretty darn good great.... way better than the defense they have now, which is pretty good too.

Bears suck now in comparison to the 85 team.

Yup, it caused a bit of a controversy when coach Ditka sent Perry in as RB in a goal-line play, instead of letting Payton score a TD in his first (and last) Super Bowl game. Perry did score a TD on that play.

BTW... that "Jim" guy they had at QB, was Jim McMahon (don't know if that's correct spelling), and he has 2 Super Bowl rings... but he only got 1 with the Bears, on that 85 team which won Super Bowl 20. Know where he got the other? He was Bret Favre's back-up in Super Bowl 31, with the Packers.

The reason I remember that Bears team so well was my mother's cousin's son (my 3rd cousin?) played defensive tackle for Western Michigan, was drafted by the Bears around that time, but couldn't make the team because they had Perry, McMichael, and veteran DT Henry Waechter. He was pretty good, and played for the Colts a few seasons after being cut by the Bears in the final cut after training camp.

I will admit to being a Bears fan back then. I lived in Chicago's burbs til '91, and my parents were Bears season ticket holders (I went to 4 games with my dad, using my mom's ticket, in the 85 season, including the playoff game against the Rams). My grandparents (born & raised as cheeseheads in the Mauston/Necedah area) were die hard Packer fans, and game days got pretty interesting at our house. I "converted" to a full-fledged Packer fan after moving north in '91, and the Packers signing Reggie a year or two later. I played in high school, LB & DE, and I've always been a fan of good defensive players. IMO, the best defensive player to ever play in the NFL was Reggie White. I still wear my "92" jersey.

But more than any team loyalties, I'm a football fan first, and appreciate talented players regardless of the jersey color they wear.

What's bizarre is I just remembered McMahon's name right before I came on here.  Hhehehehehe.  It just flashed into my mind and I wasn't even thinking about it.  That whole subconscious deal.

I'm actually a fan of the game more than the players.  From about 6th grade to about Junior year, I lived for football.  I loved playing it and watching it.  Even after high school I'd play pick up games at the park with guys.  I too played defense quite a bit, with some offense.  But was a better defensive player.  Cornerback and safety.  I was slow though for either position and got in trouble a few times because for that.  But....  still had loads of fun.  I did play WR on freshman and JV and I had a few long catches a couple of times that send you into the clouds for having done it.

As far as the players go, I think it's all a racket.  They all make WAY too much money, and that many times goes to their heads.  But...  I don't have cable or ESPN and they don't play high school games on the tube.  I would far prefer to watch LeMans racing, but that's barely ever on also.  So.....  I'm in the old boat, "If you can't beat them join them".   I usually just refrained from watching for most of my adult life. But for some reason I'm catching the bug right now.

I never played any organized football (long story full of regrets deleted).  I was a runner instead, and decent at it (Cross Country/Indoor/Outdoor, Varsity as a freshman, Captain as a Junior, a couple of school records, yada) - but I worked the sideline at football games as part of the training staff when the games didn't conflict with CC meets.

Most of my football knowledge comes from watching on TV.

"A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away" I played some high school football in Chicago, 1966-1968. How should I put this... I was a bit of a "delinquent" in my H.S. years, not very mature, and got "removed" from the team a few times for drinking, fighting, bad grades, etc. It was a pretty rough 'inner city' neighborhood. I loved football, but I wasn't a "jock" by any means. I wasn't the best 'student' either, so I did not go to college, & I didn't play any college football. I played a little bit after H.S. in a city park league, but not for very long (3 or 4 games). Work got in the way. Being single, I was first in line at my employer to be sent on "out of town" construction jobs. I didn't mind it and even volunteered to go, because the pay was much better going on the road, and it got me out of my parents' hair, and away from my "bad influence" friends.... a lot of whom became druggies. The closest I ever came to college football was working on building the new stadium at Western Illinois U.

edit to ad: I did some coaching and referee work for some Pop Warner football in the 1980s. That was more fun than actually playing. Some of the parents were ignorant bastards though.

Well I could tell you were an athlete of sorts.  Did you wrestle or basketball?  Baseball?  I wrestled since I was a young boy.  I made it to sectionals Junior year and got my butt whipped in the first rounds.  I really wasn't anything spectacular.  But I grew up wrestling.  I had cousins that did it and they got me into it.  I don't think I won a match until I got a girlfriend and had her come to my meets.  Then I got motivated for some reason.  LOL.

Little league baseball.  I was a center fielder who couldn't hit to save his life (turns out, cross-eye dominance affects batting just like it does shooting)... but could bypass the cutoff man and get to home plate more often than not.
I wrestled since I was a young boy.  I made it to sectionals Junior year and got my butt whipped in the first rounds.  I really wasn't anything spectacular...

CC running is TOUGH.  I had a friend who did it and he'd get me out a few times in preparation for wrestling.  But I never did like it much.  YUCK.  It's hard.  You gotta have mental toughness.

Cross Country running was basically off-season training for me. My specialty was the middle distances.  800m specifically, with a personal best of 1:53.5 as a 16 year old Junior. Not bad for a spindly kid from Jersey that weighed 110 soaking wet.

I did occasionally drop to 400 (not really fast enough - never broke 0:52 officially), usually ran both 4 and 800 relays, and would rabbit for 2 laps of the mile if needed. Junior year I won the state sectional with a 1:56.4 and went to the state group meet - where I was horribly outclassed.  There was a 20 year old "kid" from Newark East Side (a rough, inner city HS), that was putting in NCAA/Olympic level performances (IIRC, his best that year was around 1:47, with the all-time US HS record ~1:46.5).  I'm pretty sure his crotch was at the level of my armpit, and he had a full-on mustache.  Not really a fair fight, but what can you do?  I placed 4th overall, so it didn't really matter anyway... I didn't have a quick enough time for even a wildcard spot in the state championship race (top 6 times statewide from the group meets).

That was my last meet.  I trained up with the CC team over the following summer, but had to drop sports and get a job to help Mom pay the mortgage before classes started my senior year.  I always wondered where I could have ended up if I'd kept at it.  There was some recruitment interest from D2 schools even then... but I can't help think that where I ended up in God's good providence is a whole lot better!

Anyhow, during the indoor track season we lifted with the Wrestlers and would invite them out for runs.  They never lasted past the first.  (we were doing 12 mile Fartlek sessions outdoors in the cold three days a week).  For "fun", every other session we'd run 4 miles to the local rec center, play 45 minutes of two on two full-court hoops, and then run the 4 miles back.  Good times, and great training.  Much moreso than Cross Country... all I got from that was sore and injured.

I always loved the competition and hatedthe running, with the exception that the long distance od CC gave me some "alone time".  I ran not because I liked it, but because it was something I was decent at, and it met the required criteria of "sports" for Dad (football was "too violent" for Mom).

Drinking, hell yes. Old Style beer was my brand, because that's what my dad drank, and from  drinking  his, I got to liking it. I had a thing for tequila too. Smoking? Newports. Never touched the "roll your own" type., although there was plenty of it around. I figured if my old man caught me with a beer or pack of Newports, I might get grounded a few days. If he caught me with weed, I might not survive the ass-kicking I'd get.   There were some lines you just didn't cross with him, and drugs topped that list. Showing disrespect to a woman, any woman (even the hookers down on the corner)  was another line you didn't cross. I miss him. He died from brain cancer 15 yrs ago.

rfb45colt,  thanks for sharing your experiences.  I forgot to say that in my last post.  Where did you play and what years?  For some reason it's nice to reminisce.  LOL.

FMD, where did you play and what years?

Wow, thank you for sharing about your Dad.  I rolled my own.  And there was never drugs involved.  I loved drum tobacco.  It was far superior to any already rolled cigarettes, imho.  I was not into drugs.  My sister was though.  I smoked weed  a few times and I always freaked out.  BAD. I would have weird, I think neurological reactions that were very significant.  You wouldn't believe me if I told you.  But it's bizarre.  So I never did like it.  It did the opposite to me than what people say it normally does.  Drinking was my past time for quite a while too though.  Thank God I stopped that.  Well, he helped me stop.

...  I was a runner instead, and decent at it (Cross Country/Indoor/Outdoor, Varsity as a freshman, Captain as a Junior, a couple of school records, yada)...

Well I could tell you were an athlete of sorts.

Did you wrestle or basketball?  Baseball?

This made me crack up.  Was the guy seriously 20 years old?  LOL.  You painted a fun picture.  Thank you for sharing.  Yes, I'm sure God was watching over your path.  As he does us all.

How much I miss how well my body could work.  I played in a band after high school and we played in my barn.  We had a basketball court up there that my Dad and I laid down a good plywood floor and a key and all that.  It was sweet.  So I worked landscaping all day, rush home from about an hour away, Play music until 10 PM, otherwise the cops would come, and then we'd play basketball for another 2 hours.  Or more.   Now with lymes disease, if I even think about being that active I would have a heart attack.  LOL.  Yes, good times.  Thanks for reminiscing.
