Yesterday, I sent Sen. Johnson a short message stating that in the wake of the CT tragedy the president has called for tighter gun control and I don't agree with it. This is what he sent me back:

Dear Jake,

Thank you for taking the time to contact me with your thoughts on federal gun control measures in light of the recent tragedy in Connecticut.

A terrible and incomprehensible act of violence took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  We are all deeply impacted by the horror of little children and brave adults being murdered. There are many serious issues that will need to be discussed and considered in the weeks and months to come. But right now, our primary concern should be for the families and the community of Newtown.

At moments like this, America comes together to mourn and support one another.  We will do so again in the coming days, and then search for answers on how to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts. It is important for me to hear the views and concerns of the people I serve. Since taking office, I have received over 600,000 pieces of correspondence and have had over 200,000 participants in live forums and telephone town hall meetings. Please feel free to contact me in the future if I can further assist you or your family. It is an honor representing you and the good people of Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate.

Sincerely,
Ron Johnson
United States Senator

I guess we'll see if he's going to toss gun owners under the bus. I sent Sen. Elect Baldwin the same message, no response from her yet.

I honestly agree with his response but the bodies weren't even in the ground yet and the President is already calling for gun control ,so now is the time to discuss it.

I won't be surprised when Baldwin tells me she is for more gun control, it's not going to be some big shocking revelation. The lack of any commitment from Johnson has me worried.

This is what I got from Tammy over F&F when I urged her to investigate Holder:

Dear Mr.
Infidel
:

Thank
you for contacting me about the Fast and Furious sting operation and the Contempt of Congress vote for
Attorney General Eric Holder.  It is good to hear from you.

As
you know, the Fast and Furious sting operation was a gun-trafficking network that attempted to trace
firearms in order to follow the flow of weapons in Mexican drug cartels.  Started during the administration
of President George W. Bush, the Fast and Furious sting was run out of the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms,
Tobacco, and Explosives
(ATF),
a federal law enforcement program within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).  The ATF's aim was to
use the information to prosecute, disarm, and break the cartels. However, weapons from the Fast and Furious
operation were found at multiple violent crime scenes in Mexico, and as a result, the entire program
came under intense scrutiny from Congress, the media, and the American public.

As
you know, Representative Darrell
Issa,
chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, held a Congressional investigation into
the Fast and Furious operation. Rep.
Issa
claimed Attorney General Eric Holder deliberately misled Congress about when he was aware that the operation
was in action. Attorney General Holder testified before the House Committee that his office receives
over a hundred pages of summaries in a weekly report, and while addressed to him, many are reviewed by
members of his staff.  Holder received a subpoena for DOJ documents related to the operation.

Despite
the fact that Attorney General Holder appeared before Congress nine times and released over 7,000 pages
of documents concerning the Fast and Furious operation, in April of 2012, Representative
Issa
announced that the Oversight Committee was drafting a Contempt of Congress resolution against Holder
for 'stonewalling Congress.'

Prior
to the vote, I signed on to a letter circulated by Representative John Dingell, asking for a proper investigation
into the failures of the Fast and Furious operation.  Mr. Dingell explained that the investigation identified
no evidence that the Attorney General or senior Department officials were aware of guns moving across
the border in this program.  To the contrary, as soon as the Attorney General became aware of the gun
exchange, he put a halt to the program and ordered an investigation.  On June 28, 2012, in a largely
party-line vote, Attorney General Holder was held in contempt by the House of Representatives.

Like
you, I believe that there needs to be increased accountability and transparency within the federal government.
During a time when the American people are increasingly distrusting of the government, it is more important
than ever for Congress to combat ineffective programs and improve responsible governance.  However, in
these efforts for increased responsibility and transparency, it is important that Congress work on the
significant challenges facing our country instead of looking to score cheap political points.  Please
know that I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter, and I will continue to work to further responsible
governance in Congress.

Again, thank you for sharing your views.  Your opinion
matters to me.  If I can be of service to you in any other way, please do not hesitate to let me
know.  As a security precaution, all mail sent to Congress is first irradiated.  This process
causes significant delays.  To ensure the fastest response, I encourage all constituents who have
access to the internet to contact me through my website at http://tammybaldwin.house.gov.

Sen. Johnson needs lots of polite but well-reasoned letters.

Sounds like he's not decided either way.

How much you want to bet a majority of those letters are calling for more gun control.

It sucks that our rights and freedoms hang by such a fragile string that can be all undone by one, single nutjub.

I also got the same letter word for word back from Ron.
I'm thinking about a phone call next.
