I'll be near the big lake for a few days.
Is there anywhere nearby to shoot or anything an Arfcommer would find interesting? |
| Not sure about shooting, but go up to Sayner. There's a hardware store there that has a collection of vintage snowmobiles in the front part of the store. Well worth the trip. Then go down the road to Sayner Pub and have a bloody mary while looking up at the hand painted scene of the area. |

If you do go to Sayner, check out the Vilas County Museum too.
As for shooting ranges..... Vilas County's Conover range is about 5 miles north of Eagle River, on the east side of Hwy 45. Nice range, and it's free (there is a donation receptacle to help with the upkeep, & be sure to follow the posted rules). 15 yd pistol, 25, 50, 100yd rifle, and a shotgun area for shooting clays (you must bring your own thrower). There are no outhouses nor restroom facilities. Another two ranges are nearby... Caywood, north of Arbor Vitae on the east side of Hwy 51, and the Boulder Junction range is on east side of hwy M, north of hwy N a few miles (across M from DNR's Trout Lake station). All ranges are marked by signs, all are free. There's a big flea market in St. Germain every monday. I went yesterday... snagged four boxes of Hornady Tap 9mm (two boxes of 124grs, two boxes of 147grs) for $10 a box. |

Arfcom comes through big time again! That's exactly what I needed. Caywood is nearest and looks worth trying. Do they have benches and stands? Is it off 51N? I was looking for it on the satellite map. I've been to the flea market before and plan to go again.... Yup benches, target stands, etc. It's just north of a big gravel quarry owned by Northern Lakes Concrete, on 51 north of 70 east, on the east side of 51N. Pretty much right aross 51 from where North Farming Rd goes west. I've never used Caywood... I'm much closer to the Conover range, and even closer is a ""private" range I have access to on a friend's hunting 40. If you want a real good satelite map of Vilas County, use this one. http://vcgis.co.vilas.wi.us/webdocs/mapportal.htm click on "full control". All others pale in comparison. This one shows property owners, etc. It's a plat book with an aerial view, and it zooms in much closer than Mapquest or Google. I was home when they took the photos... I can plainly see my truck in my driveway. |
