Hey guys, new to the forum and to shooting in general. Just bought my first firearm a Glock G17 gen4 and am loving getting into shooting but I have seen and fallen in love with the idea of shooting an AR15. As I have started to look at outdoor ranges I think I might like to plink from some distance and put some more rounds down range particularly some 22 ammo. There is good information here for sure and I will keep looking at site but I have to say as a new shooter I am overwhelmed with trying to learn about these rifles. Anyone care to point me at some materials/web reading to just get fundamentals of AR15s? As a new shooter do I need to know them inside and out before I go buy some kind of starter gun and start shooting/learning?

Welcome to the forum.

I read over a lot of the material offered right here on the site. Scroll to the bottom of the site homepage. There's a bunch of guides, manuals and reference materials.

Also, there's a section under "AR-15" with the forum title "Build it yourself". It has a ton of advice and suggestions plus you get to see the build progress of others.

Starter gun? Nah. Just build one. After the first one you'll figure out what you really like/don't like so you can improve on your second

This forum does have some good information.
It also has a hell of a lot of bad information.
Unfortunately the mods are not too interested in stopping the spread of the bad information here.

Short answer, buy a Colt 6920 for around $1000 and call it a day.

I did the same.  I built my first a little over a year ago, and I have the itch to build another for myself my wife

Take some time, read through a bunch of threads, you'll be able to get some perspective on what you may want.  Make your way to the Roasted Nuts shoot this summer, and see what others are shooting as well.

I especially wanted to highlight the bold part. My (first) AR was my 3rd gun ever, I built it myself and am just waiting for some parts to finish my second one. It truly is simple.

Check out this page: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/226782_.html it has ALL the information you need to put together your own rifle. The video from "Life Liberty Etc." goes step by step on building your lower. Just remember that the big side goes down on the disconnector spring (I got this wrong the first time ).

What part of the state are you from?

Read all you can and decide what you want.  I built my first last year and if you take your time, you'll have no trouble.

Also, if you want to grab all your parts / a full gun stop my Midwest Industries.  Those guys will hook you up with exactly what you want.

Head over to Cross Plains and look up PT Firearms. Talk to Pete. Tell him you want to build one. Bring the parts back to Madison, some of us have all the tools you'd need to build one.

Let me know if you need some help.
