Well I've been living here for about 6 years now came from the commie state of Illinois.
Crook County to be exact..I just changed my cell phone # to a Wisconsin area code and a new number. That was the last thing to cut ties with Illinois...Feels good..! F*%K Illinois..! Just wanted to vent...Thanks.. |

It takes much more than that to no longer be considered a FIB. So long as he doesn't vote like he's in Cook County and leaves any Bears/Cubs/Sox/Bulls/Blackhawks/Fire stuff at the door, he'll do just fine. Mike And quits driving in the left lane for no fuckin reason... |

I'm originally from Michigan, moved here 3 1/2 years ago...
there are some idiosyncrasies that I will never pick up... for example....
Noodles in chili... unique to WI Stop and Go lights... rest of the country just says light, or traffic light. bubbler.... I was recently made aware of why that name stuck... but its still a drinking fountain to everyone else. I agree a water fountain is whats found in the mall, or outside the Bellagio. Tyme machine... I can only imagine the looks Wisconsinites receive in other parts of the country when they ask the gas station clerk if they have a tyme machine out back.. I know this origin too (take your money anywhere) but it's still funny. There are a few others, but those were the big ones :) No offense! |

It's also required that you learn the proper term. "WISCONSINITE" You mean "Sconnie"? only ass hats from Minnesota say it that way. i never in my entire life herd anyone say it like that till i started working in Minnesota ETA Oh welcome to the state. Dont pass people when they are going 80 mph and start yelling at the dumb Fibs pulling boats up north |

| Sconnie, god I hate that fucking term. Living on the border and working in MN for the last 20 years has only made my hatred run deeper. I don't call you a Sotie, so I am not a Sconnie. You are a mud duck, get it right. A dirty, bottom feeding bird that filters plankton from mud in your mouth. Not an appelatation for brown or dark skinned people, like the news media said it was after the deer hunters were killed by a Minnesotan, we all know the story. |

Why can't I get a decent glass of iced tea anywhere in this state?? I've learned not to eat anything fried at a restaurant on Fridays or it's going to taste like fish!! My first OWI is just a really expensive moving violation, NOT a crime!! I looked at my grandmother in law like she had a third eye when she said she was going to the tyme machine!!
The county I live in has at least 5 roads named Lincoln.. The lack of sunshine must really suck the imagination out of you guys!! Oh, and I think the single hardest adjustment has been moving from a red to blue state, and the general mentality that accompanies the population. UFF DA!! I almost forgot!! The complete lack of short vowel sounds!!

Welcome. and burn your FOID. Why burn it, when you can use it for target practice? Exactly what I did with mine. I put some .452" diameter holes in it with a .45Colt Blackhawk, then finished it off with a 12ga. with 3" "T shot" goose loads. Wasn't much left of it. Moved to Vilas County WI in 1991, from ILL, at the age of 41. Born in WI, but grew up on Shitcago's south side, but moved away from "the city" as soon as I got married in '72... finally came back "home". |

I tihnk my FOID is still locked in the safe. Expired many moons ago. I had the misfortune of being stationed there for 4 years when I was on active duty. I could go to war and kill people, but if I wanted to posess a firearm in IL, I needed to have my parents sign for my FOID since I was not yet 21. Go figure. |

I'm missing something. What is wrong with the speed limits? (I think they're too low, but I tend to think that everywhere...) |

I'm back from the Dakotas for 3 years now, and i'm finally getting used to 55. Used to seem like I was crawling at that speed. Out in ND, roads are 65, interstates are 75. of course, everyone goes way over that, and tickets are $2/mile over. I got a $20 ticket once for going 10 over. |

Not an appelatation for brown or dark skinned people, like the news media said it was after the deer hunters were killed by a Minnesotan, we all know the story. I did hard time in MN, like 20 years. Moved there for the job. Even the radio station cellebs call people of WI; Sconnie's, cheese heads etc. My Dad grew up near Gilman, WI and bequeathed his love of the Packers onto me as a kid growing up in Indiana. The thing that pissed me off the most about MN is the Viking fans. Nothing but bandwagon fans. Not mention the hate towards the Packers and the fans. Hell I don't hate the Vikings, hell I feel sorry for the poor bastards; I really do. Having a fan base that turns on you on a dime would suck. I moved here 6 months ago and am getting ready to buy a house. The people here are great, as well as the Pack, the cheese, beer, brats, BBQ and traffic. Need proof WI people are cool? They took a MN insult; cheese heads and made it their own. I love it. Ed |

Noodles in chili... unique to WI Actually, I'm pretty sure that's an Ohio thing that migrated here somehow. Fairly rare North of I80. I don't really see it much up here except at George Webbs. Stop and Go lights... rest of the country just says light, or traffic light.
That particular colloquialism is ubiquitous in Southeastern PA (Harrisburg/York, etc.). bubbler.... I was recently made aware of why that name stuck... but its still a drinking fountain to everyone else. I agree a water fountain is whats found in the mall, or outside the Bellagio.
Ya got me there. Tyme machine... I can only imagine the looks Wisconsinites receive in other parts of the country when they ask the gas station clerk if they have a tyme machine out back.. I know this origin too (take your money anywhere) but it's still funny.
When I first moved here, ATMs were not as common (you actually had to look for one), and not all were on the same regional networks. I had a bank account back East that used "MAC" (Money Access Center) machines. That was an interesting conversation when I went to open an account out here. Throw in the other regional networks "PULSE", "MOST", etc. (no idea what the acronyms stood for) into the mix, and bank clerk and I were speaking different languages. At some point later, I took a trip out of state and slipped asking someone where I could find a TYME machine. Got a great WTF? look. Quoted:

I remember when 41 was 55 MPH for its entire length (I got my first speeding ticket within a week of moving here). Why can't I get a decent glass of iced tea anywhere in this state??
Wisconsin doesn't serve iced tea.
<== College in VA. I've learned not to eat anything fried at a restaurant on Fridays or it's going to taste like fish!!
My first OWI is just a really expensive moving violation, NOT a crime!! I looked at my grandmother in law like she had a third eye when she said she was going to the tyme machine!! ![]() The first isn't all that bad... as long as you order fish like the rest of the state (adapt and overcome, baby!). The second is a crime... or should be (damn shame either way). The third I addressed above, and doesn't seem to be as big of an issue now that all the ATM networks are connected. The county I live in has at least 5 roads named Lincoln.. The lack of sunshine must really suck the imagination out of you guys!!
Try looking up "Highland" locally. A few years back when Annie_O and I were looking for a house, we narrowed our choices down to about 6 (from the 80+ we looked hard at). Locations ranged from North of West Bend, South of Burlington and just east of Jefferson. All were within an hour's commute to Milwaukee, and 5 of the six were on "Highland".
Oh, and I think the single hardest adjustment has been moving from a red to blue state, and the general mentality that accompanies the population.
The state's solidly purple, in reality. If it weren't for the farm subsidies and Madison/Milwaukee, it'd be red... besides, I've been places in "red" states on the other side of the Mason-Dixon where a R won't get a single vote from folks because the Republican party is the party of Abraham Lincoln (and the Dem's are more conservative than the Republicans). If you want to see blue state mentality, visit New Jersey, New York, or Massachusetts. They make the folks in Madison look like a bunch of rank amateurs. UFF DA!! I almost forgot!! The complete lack of short vowel sounds!!
I can't really criticize the accent. I grew up in Joisey, and still slip with a "mawl", "cawfeee", etc. on occasion. I can criticize the unique grammar used in the state. PSA, folks: Interrogative sentences about future conduct do NOT always end with the adverb "yet".

Ehh on sports I am not too worried about them, outside of watching nascar on occasion. About not pulling for the blackhawks, give me a break. does MKE have a pro hockey team or madison or green bay? As far as baseball goes you could probably pull for the Cubs pretty easily, seeing that the cubs and the brewers are usually (NOT ALWAYS) but usually near the bottom of the list in the seasons. basketball I dont really care about to watch and pretty much the same with football.
Although I will probably always be a bears fan at heart. Sure the pack can win all they games they want as long as the bears win the games against the pack is all. Besides honestly the bears wont ever get better untill they get a decent coach and revamp the lineup, untill then they suck. I may have been born in the flatland and raised there too but that doesn't mean I liked the state. besides I am only half FIB by birth, moms half of the family is from this state and still have plenty of family scattered throught the state still. I blend in untill i mis pronounce a town or out myself as to where I came from. Besides when did they change the test from having to spell Oconomowoc properly to be considered a wisconsinite? |

Verbs can be conjugated as well.. Your brother does not "drive truck," he is a "truck driver." Oh, & don't forget to "bring with!!"
Also took me a minute to figure out what a hot dish was.. It's a casserole where I come from.. To be fair, we have trash not garbage, cabinets not cupboards, we "cover" things with lids, and drink soda pop.. Well, mostly it's coke..

While I'm used to answering "What kind of Coke would you like?" with something not always associated with CocaCola, it's "soda" for me, not "pop"... and my groceries go into a bag, not a sack, thankyouverymuch. The rest I can live with. |

For the record it's "cubbard", rhymes with "Old Mother Hubbard", from the nursery rhyme. Duh.

In my neck of the woods it's "Balsam" or "Hemlock". There's 5 differant "Balsams" and 3 differant "Hemlocks", all within 10 miles.
Oh, and I think the single hardest adjustment has been moving from a red to blue state, and the general mentality that accompanies the population.
Just the opposite for me. I moved from metro Chicago to an area where the local Democratic Party held their meetings in a phone booth... until enough FIBs of the Dem persuasion moved up here to require them to rent something bigger.... like the "outhouses" at the wayside. The only "language" differances I've noticed is you never hear "across the street" (if you do, you know it's a FIB talking). Up here, it's a road. Or the term "police"... it's Sheriff or deputy. In the "city", when you hear gunshots, it's usually followed by the sounds of sirens. Up here, if you hear gunshots (and it's not a hunting season), it means someone nearby bought a new firearm, is trying out a new handload, or saw a porcupine/skunk/coyote in their woods. If it's close enough, you walk up the road (or jump on your 4-wheeler or snowmobile) to see what they got (and a good neighbor brings a shovel & a six-pack ). |
