It was extra icy this morning making the commute home from work (Sussex -> Milwaukee). If you even thought about accelerating or braking you lost traction. I saw AT LEAST 9 accidents... one of which I am 99% sure was fatal. On 94E, just east of the HWY 18 / Bluemound overpass there was a pickup with a gooseneck that lost it. Took out 6-7 of those concrete barriers in the median, completely knocking them over. The trailer was on its side in the oncoming lanes, and all I could see left of the pickup was its hood laying on the oncoming side of the freeway (possibly it had been towed already, I was 3 lanes over and on the opposite side of the freeway). I saw 4 cars that had smacked curbs and broken their front suspensions, 2 people spun into ditches, and a nice 2-car sideswipe (looks like the guy in the middle lane lost it and hit the guy in the right lane, then they both spun and hit the curb). 3 downed light poles. Made it home on crappy low-profile all-seasons. At least now it's salty for next time. |

Someone died just north of Jefferson this morning due to icy roads. He stopped to help some chick who spun out on a bridge on Hwy 26 (durr, bridges be slippery), was pushing her car or something, fell over the side into the Rock River and hasn't been found. An odd way to go. (The bridge is not meant for foot traffic and the railings are low enough you could easily stumble over them.

They said on the radio this morning that he jumped off to avoid being hit by another vehicle... But we all know the accuracy of the news sources these days. |

One person may say he jumped, another might say slipped, another might say he climbed underneath like Spiderman. |

They were talking about the freezing rain on the radio while I was driving in, and I wasn't seeing it. Gave everyone some extra distance and started paying attention to how the other cars were sticking; trying to get a heads up if anyone was losing it in front of me. Everything was fine. Full grip.
Then I was turning around in a parking lot at a crawl's pace and found myself sliding sideways with no grip at all. I was in full time 4WD on new snow tires.
The ice doesn't give you any warning at all. I was paying attention to the road conditions and had no clue that something had changed until the steering was unresponsive. You're driving along and suddenly the tires don't stick any more. I much prefer driving in the snow. It's like riding a MC in the dirt. Predictable. |

The media seems optimistic as they are still calling it "rescue efforts resumed again this morning". By the time emergency personnel get on scene with boats and divers...it's already a recovery effort. No good deed goes unpunished and this does seem to be a rather interestingly odd way to go. Unless it's part of some elaborate fake your own death scenario. |

Roads were just wet, grip was good on traveled roads. Stepped out of my car in the parking lot and it was very icy. |
