In another thread about Dressing Warm for our Snowy WI Winters made me think about, how in the hell do you CCW while looking like the Michelin Tire Man and still have quick access to your CCW rig without having to say, "Hay, wait a minute while I undress" ?

Just ordered shoulder holsters for use under winter jackets.  The belly band holster would be another option.  Or even just a regular OWB open-carry type holster that your jacket covers.

I am using a cheap OWB leather vega thumbbreak.  It rides high enough to not be exposed under my winter coat.

Works well. I've packed many times when it was in the negative double digits in ND. Most folks keep their hands in their pockets when out and about as it's cold as shit.

another option is a coat that has pockets that go straight through. Many trench coats and coveralls have this. Still, not the best option as navigating through the pocket can be a PITA.

Learn to draw from concealment with your setup.  With practice, you can become quick.  Not as quick as open in a owb speed holster, but quick enough.

I only ever wear a pull over fleece anyway...perfect cover garment and it conceals even a large handgun very well.

Practice, Gentlemen.  Practice.

Good ideas guys, especially the training part. I have a mouse gun that I have used in the past (of course not concealed) but with bulkier gloves on it kind of gets too weird for my liking.

If anything you can carry a much LARGER pistol under winter gear.  Carry something you can fire with your gloves on and then practice shooting it with gloves on.  Practice drawing it safely (unloaded) at home from under several layers of clothing.

big +1.

An arctic parka can easily conceal an AK Folder.

Minor point, but the regulations I printed out along with my application seem to limit CCW to pistols (along with certain knives, clubs, etc). This is in the definition of "weapon." No rifles, shotguns, etc.

I guess if you have a registered pistol receiver, you're GTG...

If you buy the right clothes you don't have to look like the Michelin man.  Buy really, really good clothing and wear layers and you can cut down on the bulkiness of the clothing.  I usually carry in my pocket anyway, so it won't make a difference.

During the winter I carry my duty weapon which is a full sized 1911 in a Blackhawk Serpa holster under my coat. Winter carry is the easiest carry.

Minor point, this was in North Dakota, where any weapon can be carried with a CCW. I have carried a subgun, mostly just to say I did.

I had rigged this up.

Partly for laughs.

Partly to address FerFal's notes on the Argentinian SHTF, when things arguably were bad enough to warrant a carbine/rifle, but you still couldn't get away with it in practical terms, and have a "cake and eat it too" solution.

Partly because Blue Force Gear had stopped selling theirs by the time I'd learned of it.

And WI spoils all the fun, making the permit handgun only.

Events at last summer's WI State Fair, just a mile from my home, make me feel that feeling the urge to carry some sort of long-gun isn't so "Walter Mitty" after all.

I too have a Draco, and I plan to SBR it, but the fact I legally could carry it on my CWP as long as it has no stock gives me pause. I guess I'll just have to buy another someday soon one to SBR, one to keep as a handgun.
