Ok, along with meeting a lot of nice people, watching IK win the treasure of Egypt in the raffle drawing, and sharing a chuckle at watching the soccer moms look over at us with concern when the MG42 went full auto I did take home a thought that has had a chance to fester after the 2010 Roasted Wet Nuts Shoot. Time to share.* Seriously? Are we that crappy that no one could get it? I was surrounded by three 50 bmgs, one to my left and two to my right along with numerous well scoped bolt actions and ARs and no one could get it. I realize many people were not there, but it was still a good crowd and there was no small number of atemptees either. Was I the only one to be amazed by this? If not amazed, then perhaps bothered? (And I'm calling myself out on this too. I didn't shoot much that day, but clearly I didn't get it either) Proposal: some kind of friendly shooting competition in the future Frozen/Roasted Nut Shoots? If we are getting loads of donations from sponsors (well done on that again hawzwood...) then maybe put a few choice items up for the taking for 1st, 2nd, 3rd? a 600/500 yard event and a 300/200 yard event? *Backstory: for those who don't know, someone graciously donated a lawnmower and packed it with some goodies and hauled it out to the 500 yard line. After about two to two and a half hours of failure, it was brought in to the 300. It took about another hour for someone's S/O (sorry, I can't remember who...) down on the far left of the line to hit it with a standing unsupported shot with an SKS (or something like that, only caught a glimpse). /rant |

Funny you mention this because I agree and have been thinking similar thoughts since the recent post referencing Roasted Nuts. It was more of a "handout" the way it worked out. With the # that came and left (some folks showed up after the bulk were gone as well) we had around 50 which isn't bad for Round 1. There is room for "real" competition as you mentioned and "fun" versions as well. There are a few things that could use some work –– one, if it was to have some competition and/or get larger, I am not sure it can be where it was as it was. Maybe. Maybe not. I also think it would be "fair" to move around each year. Maybe. Maybe not. A private place might work better and allow more setup in advance, i.e. Racine? Is that even an option? Members? This might also take it to a level of needing a key sponsor (insurance... etc. ?) ![]() If nothing else, and even without the pile-o-prizes, we certainly could scrape up a 1/2/3 place prize. Stealing experiences from running some work related golf outings as well, we should have a prize for something more random or "participation" just because you aren't a great shot but at least tried. I would also like to get some hands on demos this year as well from vendors. OK, really I would like to recreate a mini LaRue Range Day experience I attended this last year. Need a whole different animal of range though. At least if the planning starts now, we should be able to come up with a date that works for at least 20 percent of people 7 months in advance. Maybe. OK, maybe not. We'll NEVER find a day that works for everyone! Or a location. ![]() ETA –– Treasure of Egypt.

Final thought for the evening –– I motion we make neoinarien the Assistant Director of Strategic Alliances and Event Planning (A.D.S.A.E.P.) for this event. All in favor? Actually, to pick his real title, you must choose one from each column of the Add Bullshit To Your Resume Title Generator below.

IIRC, it was Murooka's "date". If he chooses to elaborate further, that's up to him. She was using my AC556 at the time. As they say, "a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare". Same goes for firearms. Eventually, someone will hit the target.
From what I recall, there were several hits on the lawnmower, but none hit the charge. I took a few cracks with my .50 (far left side of the line). The last time I shot it was at 800 yards, and was some time ago. So naturally I wa a bit rusty. I had fun. Overall a good time. That's all that matters. I'd have nothing against a friendly competition, but most likely would not participate. To me, it takes out some of the fun. I shoot to relax and have fun. I'd be more than happy to spot, or even let someone else use one of my firearms. |

It would take some organization to make a shoot for prizes work, which I did not see a whole lot of while there. There was a lot of gun handling that day on the line, with a lot of high power stuff going down range in short order. When I arrived, the line on the right side was full, so I stayed on the left side range with my .50 BMG, MP5,etc, etc. I am actually glad I did as we had lots of room, and made it a much more comfortable experience for my son and I as well. I will admit that watching the MG42 was pretty cool, but a part of me inside was nervous when they cut loose at the long range with a belt, and were shooting high. And I never did take a shot at the lawnmower, for whatever it's worth. Prizes were really cool, and it was a great idea. But I think if I were to come back, we would need a little more control on the line.

Most shooters suck......(I include myself) Yeah, I know.... impossible...how could that be.... I have all these cools guns.... and I look cool shooting the.... that's crazy talk.... and from what I have seen, most of these gatherings are for blasting at stuffed animals... Lawnmowers, other inanimate objects... etc... so perhaps your venue is wrong for accuracy... And having a .50BMG makes you a good shot as much as me owning a set of tools makes me a Mechanic..... That's why shooting is a perishable skill that needs constant reinforcement. So a shooter could pull out a rifle and hit it with there first cold bore shot... |

FYI 5.56/223 will not reliably set off tanerite over a couple of hundred yards. I know this from experience. Got a good hit at 300 meters and all it did was spill the powder all over.
FYI: I consider myself a mediocre shooter, most of the people I shoot with also consider themselves mediocre as well. |

If I were to (try) and set something up, the objective would be to make it fun and not like the usual boring comps that one may find at any club. IDK, blasting soda cans or something (with range permission, of course) instead of just punching paper and tabulating scores. In any event, as the nominee for the Assistant Director of Strategic Alliances and Event Planning to the Regional Director we'll see what the ranges have available and what is allowed.

Contests with Clay pigeons and soda cans with iron sights at 200yds and with optics at 300yds+ can be suprisingly fun... (10 shots in 60 seconds to try for 5 cans and 5 pigeons spread out to force a NPOA change, etc...) Hanging bowling pins from a string at 400yds works well also as you do not have to walk down to reset each round... No matter what the course of fire.... Count me in......

If I can make it, I may have another non-posting knucklehead similar to myself to participate in this "call out competition"... we may actually do well since we both shoot better when we shoot fast and things may blow up and stuff.
Stuff like this is really fun! I love the impromptu skeet shoots with hand wingers at the skeet range... the 50 bird 2-man Duck Hunter Volleys were fun to watch and shoot. It was the only time I could outshoot the old skeet masters... the randomness and awkwardness were the great equalizers. Sit the old farts down on a bail of hay and suddenly they were mere mortals again. What are the rules? I am not expecting SS109.402/3 type rules, that is too much thinking. More like "you stand here with this sorta firearm and shoot this stuff in this or any order, you get 10 shots, you must reload "X" number for times, etc". Classes? Divisions? I am just throwing ideas out there. You competitive guys may have a better grasp on this for a "FRIENDLY" shoot. Classes like "open sights", "non-magnified red dot/Eotech", "Open". With open being magnified optics. Divisions like: "Stock Glock/XD/M&P/Sig/HK or similar", "SBR", "14.5 inch plus AR", etc. I was not at the last shoot, but appreciate everyone who put time into the shoot. I have other suggestions. Classes and divisions make for more involvement, since everyone may not have the right setup, etc. This I have learned from 3D archery. And to all the "shooters" who were beaten by someone's girlfriend..after hours of "bang, miss!"... ! Pathetic? <Facepalm> By a Communist SKS??? <shame>

A few concerns though. 1) Are we really going to have enough shooters to make this something more than a few people were division? 2) I was figuring this would be a fun thing to run for about 30-45 min, then everyone can go back to their blasting and oggling of whatever NFA fun arrives. 3) More divisions, beyond taking much more time to run, also means more prizes or no prizes. In short: the divisions idea may work if people really like it, but that might turn the shoot from more of an informal gathering to something resembling a competition. I'd be happy to roll with whatever people want, but I was figuring something quick, painless and fun would probably be more up everyone's alley.

Now that you're coming back armed and trained with all your raffle goodies from last time... ![]() Yeah: this is almost EXACTLY what I was thinking. My only concern here is whether enough people go make a competitive go of it with iron sights at 200. I think this is something that will have to be adapted to the range conditions. IE: if we're in shiocton where the range, if memory serves, it had berms at 300 and 500. So maybe put some iron sight business at a 100 area or have big swinging plates at 300 for iron sights (soda cans would be too small for nearly everyone I'm guessing at this range). Or we could just do two divisions. It seems like this deserves a new thread at this point.

Havn't made a shoot yet but plan on it.I'd think that a HTF shoot should be kept fun and informal. When I want to compete there's IDPA and High Power.I think something like a carnival set up would be cool.A buck to play, half goes to cost the other half to prize money.Set up stages that will be quick and fun,say 10 clay pigeons at 100 yds with 10 rds and 10 seconds and the like for handgun, long range, etc. You get a "ticket" for every clay broken. After each stage (in case some only want to shoot a single stage)the entry money minus the 50% for targets is divided by the number of tickets and paid out,Everyone's a winner |

I had a blast at the Roasted Nuts Shoot despite the water works...
To set the record straight, there were numerous hits on the mower at 500 but none that set off the tannerite.
Additionally, I normally defer to the women-folk, but at the risk if sounding like a blow hard...I made the shot at 300 (after we moved the mower up from 500) that ignited the tannerite. Of course, it could have been a simultaneous hit. I was firing my iron sighted AR10B and according to our spotters, I (we) had been hitting at 500 too. Not mentioning any names, but there were witnesses. I recently watched a freshly mixed batch of tannerite vaporize into white powder after being placed at 100 yards and whacked with a round of 5.56 so who knows the reliability factor of the stuff. It did not ignite. |
