Just moved to Wauwatosa, and am curious if there are any good public ranges or clubs that are worth getting a membership at. Anywhere within an hour of Milwaukee County is good. Thanks, guys!

Schultz rod and gun club is just to the southwest in Muskego. $165 to join, then $90 a year thereafter with 15 hours of service/volunteering to help at events, or do maintenence.  It's a short range at only 100 yards, but they are putting in a 300 yard range. This will be your closest outdoor shooting opportunity. One nice feature is that they have an action pistol bay there. (They actually have several, but the rest are behind the 25, 75, 100 yard berms and not accessible during normal range time, only for matches.) It's tough to find a club where you can set up your own IDPA or USPSA stage, move some barrels or tables for barricades for practicing. They also have archery and trap shooting.

Major downsides, on the lowlands near Big Muskego lake, mosquitoes are rampant, and due to a (false, it would turn out) complaint of a house downrange being struck a few years back, you can't shoot alone. At least one other member has to be present to be allowed to shoot. However, it's so convenient, and so hard to find range time with work, wife, and kids... that it's only a 10 minute drive from my house in West Allis makes the rest of the downsides worth it to me.

Further to the southwest in Eagle is the McMiller Sports center. I haven't been there in a long time, but my understanding is they have been making improvements and keeping it  up over the years. A new management company that leases it to run the facility under contract to the WI DNR is part of that.

Daniel Boone is off to the northwest near Holy Hill, also a pretty short drive. It has excellent ranges, but has some stodgy rules, like no non-bullseye targets. You can't even put up a USPSA "box and octagon" there. It's considered "too humanoid".
