[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Vehicle Emission test question?

Does the vehicle have to have a working odometer to pass the inspection? I have a 97 Chrysler Cirrus which has a digital odometer that works when it wants to. Anyone have a guess?

i'm looking at my last vehicle inspection report, and i can't find an odometer reading on it.
not much help, sorry.

Not sure but I don't think so. I have not had to go through emissions in 10 years now. From what I understand all they do now is plug in to the OBD2 computor port and check the gas cap. There could be more but I am not sure.

I've passed tests without a working speedometer and odometer in the past. My fiance works for the company that does the testing and confirms that you do not need a functioning odometer.

A car that old is exempt from an odometer reading anyway.

I didn't know about the speedo... but they don't look at the one on your car anyway.

Too bad you didn't have a '96, cause they don't test '96 and older anymore.

in some counties. I know Washington used to (I'm assuming they still do). Seems to be the more populated counties.

Yep, its pretty much only the counties immediately surrounding Milwaukee county, and only for '96 and up vehicles. The reason for the split is that in '96, OBDII became mandatory for all vehicles, so they can test off of the car's computer itself, rather than putting the car on a dyno & doing the tailpipe readings.

Well I passed and he only asked me how many miles I think I have so all is good. This will probably be the last one she gets becasue I don't think she'll be around in two more years.
