I believe that you have to pay if you cannot provide evidence that you paid sales tax elsewhere. Mike |

Not that I have ever done this.....on the section of the title you could have the seller put down half of what you are actually paying to save on sales tax. Paying sales tax on a used vehicle is a bunch of bs anyway. I agree it is BS. The seller left it blank |

that's why it's a sales and USE tax.
it doesn't mater where you buy something if it is going to be USED in WI the state wants their 5%. Technically speaking, when you file your state taxes there is a box where you are expected (required) to report the $$$$ amount of good purchased out of state compute the use tax due and it is deducted from your return. read all the gory details here: http://www.revenue.wi.gov/pubs/pb205.pdf |

Its not too big of a deal. I took out a loan to cover all the expected expenses which includes the truck, a leaky back window fix, a new 5" lift kit |
| This being a firearms forum, I feel I should remind you that making false statements on the MV-1 form is a felony (not that I think that's proper, but it is a calculated risk to take). I've never gotten the impression that the folks working at the DOT give a shit, but YMMV. |

It is kind of like puting a flash suppressor on a post ban AR (during the ban of course)... no one was going to check... but still illegal. Hell, same deal if you were to drop an auto sear in your AR. No one will likely check, but still illegal. Integrity is what you do when no one is looking or checking. |

I'm not a tax attorney... but my understanding was that if one is purchasing online across state lines, no sales tax. Eh? Technically speaking, you're supposed to declare that and pay tax on it when you file your state taxes. Mike Really? Did not know that...then again never bought a car from out of state. Interesting though. |

Interesting though. Supposed to be on anything you buy from out of state. Groceries, gun parts, anything. You are supposed to declare and pay sales tax. Crap if you ask me. And, they do check periodically if the numbers are out of whack. Back in 99, I bought a 98 neon for $600. It was smashed up but the guy never let the ins company take it so it had a clean title. The seller and I got letters asking for the sales detials. I sent in a copy of the Bill of sale we made and a few pics of the car. Not sure what the seller did. Never heard from the state again. Now if you bought a truck for $12K and put $10k down it probably wouldn't send up a flag, but as previously stated, still illegal. Bob |
