Has anyone had any experience getting a sign off in Tomah or Monroe County?

Yes.  I lived in Tomah.  The Chief of Police in Tomah will refuse.  If you live outside of city limits you have to go through the Sheriff (Sparta) and he will refuse.  My wife worked for the State Patrol post, and while the Captain there would qualify to sign (in my understanding) he really didn't want anything to do with it either.

Trust is your best bet.

I believe both TOPD and MOSO have new bosses since you lived there.  Not sure.

I know one of the TOPD officers has an SBR...

In the last 2 years?  Maybe the Sheriff has changed, but we both know that officers having something signed for isn't always an indicator that a non-LEO will have the same luck.

Anyway, it's entirely possible there is new administration, so definitely call and ask.  The worst they can do it hem and haw and say no.

I stopped to talk to the Chief Revels today, his secretary gave me alook when I told her what I needed to talk to him about. She said he would call me back, so I guess I will see what happens. I guess I will have to look into the trust thing, where do I find info on that?

I asked my lawyer about a trust and he started talking about numbers north of $500.

My advice is to do one yourself with Quicken Willmaker ($30 program).  Many, many other members have done just that.  If you look in the Class 3 section of the Armory, I'm sure you'll find detailed accounts of how it's done.

There are a lot of benefits of a trust.  Technically, if a Title 2 weapon is registered to you, your wife cannot have access to it without your supervision.  That is, if she knows the combination to the safe it's in, and you're not home, you're in violation of the law.  (Whether anyone has or would be charged with this I do not know).  But a Trust can involve 2 people.  So you and your wife, or you and your son, could be both named on the trust, and avoid that conundrum.

Plus, no fingerprint cards, no photo on your Form 1 or 4.  I have to believe it's easier to hand your Title 2 items down to family members after you die as well, if they're held by a trust.

I currently don't have one, because I'm not in the market for another Title 2 item right now, but I will have one before I start buying or building any more.

I thought it had been longer than that since you had lived there.  I think right before I graduated college their chief switched, I almost want to say he got elected sheriff.  Only reason I have any knowledge of it is a guy I was going through school with was wanting to work there.

Yes, I'm aware that doesn't necessarily mean they will sign off on a non department member, unfortunately.
