The private land I usually hunt is not available this year so it looks like public land is my other option. I do have a couple questions about it, In the regulation book it states the shotgun/ pistol /rifle areas but I was told some towns have an ordinance against using rifles even though it is legal to use in that zone. Being that I have a few places picked out where could I find out for sure what is legal and not? I tried calling the DNR and they told me to look in the regulation booklet that was helpful.
The areas I have in mind are Waterloo Richland center and Jefferson. Also for you guys that hunt around those areas is there usually a lot of hunters there? (I know it's public so it might be hard to tell) I'm also open to hunt other areas in the state if someone has a better idea than me. Thank you for all your help |

where are you from in WI?
I know a good spot of public land in columbia county that never got hit to hard by other hunters when I hunted it for 3-4 years. I haven't hunted the land in 2 years because i have private land to hunt now, but I would tell you where it is and a few good spots if you are interested. |

just go by what the dnr regulations say. This is a good way to get arrested. There are many municipalities that have stricter gun regulations than the DNR. Some don't even allow the discharge of firearms regardless of what the DNR regulations say. You need to contract the individual towns and villages. |

Are these area's you're looking at within city limits?
The DNR's website for public land/combined with the DNR regs should be all you need. The info and maps on the public land will show what areas may be prohibited or 'archer only'. However, if you're still confused and can't get a straight answer from someone, best to play it safe and just find a new area. The DNR has been fairly good (at least in my experience) with answering questions. I always email them first in hopes they respond back in writing. The DNR website will list the email address of the property manager responsible for each public land area. Best to start there. However, sometimes you still get conflicting info. I once asked about Lodi Marsh area for hunting because of the Ice Age the runs pretty much in the middle of it. Ice Aged trail being a state trail...therefore can't possess a firearm within,,,blah, blah, blah. Anyway I get an email back stating "Yes, the Ice Age trail is a state trail rules prohibiting firearms apply". Then the next day I got a voicemail from some other DNR person saying, "No it's a public hunting ground, firearms are ok". Dohh!! Why couldn't that person put that in writing. I know people hunt there, but knowing what I know about DNR wardens I don't want to risk it. |
that was helpful.
