Hey guys,

I am looking to find a used but working cheap 12 ga break action. I keep looking on the EE but havent found anything yet. I want it as a project gun to then take out for small game this year (rabbit, squirrel, etc...) I looked on gunbroker but didnt see anything and I checked my local gun shops as well. I could really care less if it is scratched or the wood is messy. It just needs to function. $$ is tight so the cheaper the better.

I would appreciate the help. I want to get it soon, I am trying to get a local kid something to go out with. His dad and I are friends and go hunting together but they dont have enough to get him a gun so I thought I would try to help. So anything in SE WI would be cool. I could travel a bit too if a shop has one somewhere.

Thanks

well, there are over 4000 double barrel shotguns on gunbroker right now. If you can't find what you want there it probably doesn't exist

Does it have to be a break action, and does it have to be 12ga?

You might as well just get a decent used 870.  It will have much more use over the years than a break action.

I talked with my friend and he was telling me about what he wanted to save up and get his son. It is pretty much a break action 12 ga. So I thought I woul try that.

His son is a stick and is only 11. I think he wants something simple, light, and easy to use. Mainly becasue he can barely scrape by and wanted some thing cheap.

I will check out the double barrels, I didnt think of that.

In that case a 20ga would probably be better.

A 12 gauge is probably going to knock this shit out of him and he won't have any fun, and a 20ga is plenty for rabbits/squirrel etc.

Pita_146, I will 2nd this...  Testify!

Break open 12ga on the cheap to me means hard kicking H&R Pardner single shot.  Not a good choice.  Any pump 20ga is better, way better.

My first shotgun was a single shot, 12 gauge and it kicked the shit out of me.

I started my sons with 1100s. Gas guns are as soft as it gets for shotguns.

A break action 20 gauge can kick harder than a 12 gauge 870 depending on ammo. Weight effects felt recoil.  A used 870 can be found for $150 and a Mossberg 500 or Maverick can be found for even less.

If you must have a single shot, they can be found on gunbroker.com for $50 and less....

They had some nice NIB blue or pink laminate wood stocked 20 gauge 870s at the Gander Mt in Appleton for $309 a piece.

Maybe too much $ but it will pay off in the end with it's durability and versatility.

I know I got rid of my $50 break open as I am sure most of us did.

Good luck with the search.

I don't know who made it but the best small game gun I've used is my dads its a break action over under 20ga on top 22lr on the bottom or the other way around can't remember its been awhile. Had a switch in the hammer to switch the barrel.  One of these days I'll go look at the model.  But it was great for rabbits and squirels
