Just letting Ya All know I've got the 3 stages that we shot up:
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 I did use a can on my AR for the match although I can't reccommend it. Too much blowback from the chamber and not enough wind sucks Thanks to Van Pacey for running the matches this year with almost no help. He spent 9 hours setting up the match in the vids by himself even though I think almost 40 shooters showed up for the match. At $20/shooter he's making money for the club and he doesn't even live in WI! Unless something improves there won't be any 3-gun at Holmen next year. Maybe He needs to start the "Morning of the match" setup and nobody shoots until it's setup with a $5 discount for those who help like a lot of the IPSC matches are. It's too bad. Nick |

The camera is a "POV 1.5"
It is not cheap running $750. there are less expensive models. It turns out my dillon muffs have a metal band inside the headband and the hinge area fit perfectly with a 45 degree picatinney ring mount just riveted in place. The mount for the camera was fabbed up from a scope ring to fit the base. If we could get enough people together next year we could have a Range Day/Setup on the Saturday before the match. I'm sure the club wouldn't mind letting us use the range Sat afternoon to maybe get some practice on some of the stages using our own IPSC targets of course if We're the ones doing the work. I usually go over on Saturday to help setup if I can and then have a grill out and stay overnight in the clubhouse. But I live 3 hours away so getting there in time can be a problem. The more people there are for setup the better the stages can be. Shooters are also welcome to come up with stage designs and submit them to Van or whoever is the Match Director. This year Van used some similar stages as the big matches to help get some needed practice on those more difficult shooting positions. I do not want to see 3-Gun go away either since it's so much fun. If anyone wants to comment to Van you can go to the WI Shooters site and IM him. Nick I would be willing to set up in the morning of the match. With my schedule racing I can't come the day before.
I am the guy with the red flyer wagon that you let shoot your open pistol. Thank you again. You were right I shouldn't have shot it. I can't believe what a difference it was compared to my Beretta. |

Nick,
First, thanks for posting. Hopefully one day, in the future, my buddy and I will participate in these. You mentioned the blowback from the can. Do you have a gas buster charging handle? Beyond that, are there any modification that you can do or have done to lesson the blowback? I know about a bead silicone, etc. How distracting is the blowback? I know just the normal blowback gives me a "dry eye" feeling (even with shooting glasses), so I was curious as to how much worse that gets with a can? Can you give a number as to how much worse the puff is with the can, 2X's, 3X's, more? A puff of hot gas is distracting for sure. I know some of this is second nature to the guys around here, but it is new to me. Also, how much (on average) does the can help/hurt your score/time? Has this been tested by you and/or others, by shooting the same stage w/ and w/o the can. I am just curious if the blowback slows you down more than it helps. Thanks again for the post! |

If you watch the video you can see the gas coming from the ejection port which can accumulate around the shooter if there is no breeze and you're firing a lot from one spot. I don't have a gasbuster CH but I'm not sure if it would help that much. I use the can when I want to up the "cool" factor and the match is just for fun. I wouldn't use it in a big match. It is slower using the canned rifle compared to my normal 3-gun rifle since the 3-gun upper is "tuned" much better with the brake and gas system. The can increases the cyling force Past the point of tuning out on that upper. The time difference though is not going to matter much on a big stage like 1 or 3. I.E. you have a short pistol stage like stage 2 and Say the fastest time was 25 seconds and your time was 50. You just shot 50% of the total points available (usually 100 for the stage which goes to the winner) and received 50 points. Now take a long stage like 1 or 3 and the fastest time was 100 and you shot 125. You just shot 80% and get 80 points. It's all based on percentages but boils down to the shorter the stage-the more important every second is. That's why at the DPMS Tri-Gun match this year the two pistol stages were only 50 points max instead of the usual 100. It was a very good idea on their part since the time's were running in the teens and low 20's and a failure penalty is 10. You get one penalty and you just lost a third of your stage points. It saved my ass since I had the fastest times on both stages but had 1 penalty on each. Nick |
