i am moving back to the incredible state of wisconsin at the end of the month and was wondering what the rules were for hunting deer with an AR15 type rifle. is it illegal, legal, regulations that go along with it or what?
or is it not even recommended that i hunt deer with an AR15? i do plan on getting a deer rifle, but not anytime soon... Thanks, T_A |
| It's legal. Just no FMJ type ammo. Only you can determine if its ethical for you to use a 5.56 on deer. I have dropped a few in the day with my AR15 in the past, but never took a shot past 150 yards with it either. I have too much respect for the annimal to risk it running off and suffering. That just me............ |

I do know several people that have hunted with a AR and done so successfully, it just is not my preferred tool. |

I use my AR for the antlerless gun seasons since I'm tromping through heavy brush usually. Main season if I'm driving the woods, the AR, otherwise if I'm sitting for a while, my .300win. As others said, I dont bother with anything over 100yds. Using 64gr power points for hunting. I mainly use my 2 10rd mags with 5 in each but carry 2 30 rd-ers loaded with 55gr soft points in my pack. Just be prepared to have some asshat start in on "you cant hunt with those things" crap. I usually have one every other year. |

I have also taken deer with the 64 gr PP Winchesters. Remington makes 60+ grain Core Lokt rounds and Federal loads a Nosler Partition in the 60+ gr range. The issue with going over 100 yds is velocity. For reliably taking deer, the bullet should expand fully. |

Ny personal opinion is this.
A 5.56mm was desinged for and is fairly effective on people. Deer are somewhat similar to people. Size and weight. It is effective on deer as well. Proper bullet type and weight makes the job easier. I would and have used 69gr hp's. That said, it does not matter if you use a cannon on a deer, if you cannot put the shot where it needs to be the first time. Edit: spelling |

They fragmented. Couple of larger pieces and some smaller pieces. Both shots were to the heart/lungs, so almost all of the bits didn't end up in the meat, and those that did were large enough to find.
I've since switched over to using My M1A with 175 SMK's as my supply of Mk 262 is getting low. That said, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use a 5.56 again. It really is all about shot placement. |

They fell apart because they are not designed for animals. They fell apart because they have a thin jacket. They work for you, but you still might want to considerd a bullet meant for the task. |

Just review the hunting regs and you'll be fine. If you haven't been here in a few decades, I think the lines for "shotgun only" or "rifle/shotgun" have moved. Just know what area you are in. i know where ill be hunting, and have hunted there before. the furthest shot i would be taking is probably 200 meters. so ill just have to buy some of the ammo suggested and see what my rifle agrees with. |

Yes, it's legal for deer in Wisconsin.
Of course you will get a ton of the "I dropped it with one shot" responses, but I bet for every one of those there are five with a "I emptied the whole 30 rnd mag and it still ran away" story. Those are the ones who aren't talking. |

Well that was until it ran into a pack of retards in orange who unleashed everything they had on it. 100lb deer had maybe 20-30 holes in it and both left legs blown off. Me and my brother were just rolling our eyes when we walked by them all patting themselves on the back. Just think how many bullets were flying at once and I bet none of them even though of what could had been on the other side of the deer. BTW NONE of them had the evil assault weapons either. All looked like semi auto deer rifles. |
