So I am moving to WI. I always have had a beat up 12 gauge that I carried with us on outdoor excursions for protection against whatever may arise as a threat. Better to have that shotgun, with you when that Mountain Lion shows up at dusk while you are shore fishing, than not...(yes it happened to us here at Jackpot NV).

You get my drift.

What would be your suggestions as a beater gun that could provide adequate protection but be sort of perishable (nicks and dings won't cause a heart attack on it's value/worth or affect function).

I used to carry an AK until the thing became a valuable item...

I was thinking Remington 870, Marlin 45/70 Guide gun or an SKS. I do not want it to be too large of a weapon to carry.

Please consider the size, caliber (prefer nothing under 9mm), ammunition capacity, reliability and price (prefer less than $400 so used is no issue).

Thanks ahead for all the responses, ideas and opinions.

I think the remington 870 would fit all those criteria.

Get a short barreled (well 18"-18.5" so it's legal) and put a folding stock on it (I have the up over the top kind on mine) and then you have a real small compact shotgun.

I really like this idea. Some 00 Buck and slugs to follow.

It's what a buddy of mines guide used in AK a few years ago on a hunt.

If those guys use it, why not us?

if you already own the AK, use that....
odds are your cost in the thing is low. who cares what its worth these days, its only 400-600$ de3pending on country of origin...
cant go wrong with a shotgun either though...
only problem with a shotgun is you can not legally have shells in the tube. whereas the AK you can have a loaded mag in the case next to it, just put the mag in position, tug on the bolt carrier, and you are good to go.

I keep a Remington 870 marine magnum with a 18.5 inch barrel in the trunk of my car.  It is about nine years old and bounces around in my trunk from time to time (in a zipper case of course).  I don't really have to worry about corrosion and it fires every time I take it to the range.

I suggest the 870.

Out of the three choices...I would take the SKS...Functional...reasonably priced...durable...able to produce deadly force without high ammo cost.

My favorite truck gun is the Tantal I built.  It's beat to hell, I don't care what happens to it.  Ultra reliable, accurate enough, and I don't shoot 5.45 in any other guns so by staying in the truck I'm not going to dip into that ammo for a range trip.

Can you qualify your statement?

The SKS is historically a very reliable weapon. Countless soldiers that used them can disagree with you. What is the history of the probably single weapon that you have seen that had malfunctions, and why is it that you can attribute that to all SKS guns as a whole?

Use the 870 you have.

If you care, my trunk gun was a Colt 6520 until I bought a Beretta CX4 Storm carbine in .45acp that takes the same mags as my Cougar. Now I can stop at both indoor and outdoor ranges when they appear unknowingly (much like zombies)

Sorry to hijack....you might want to check out the SKS Forum
There is no reason either should be jamming.  If you are using the duck bill mags on the Chinese, then yes, it will jam.  If it's one of the early converted ones that takes AK 47 mags then something must have been screwed up during the conversion.  With the Yugo, are you loading it with stripper clips?  If so, I've had problems with some of the Cheaper Than Dirt generic stripper clips.  Otherwise all of mine are 100% reliable.

My 870 is not the most reliable either.  I've had several times in which it's jammed with 3 inch shells.  My AK and Glock are the one guns that have never failed me.

The one I carry is an early 70"s Ruger 44 carbine,  good for about anything and could match pistol ammo for a backup.....

My Yugo SKS rifles have been flawless. I have owned 5 of them in the past several years and I have never had a jam in any of them with any ammo, anytime anywhere.

That being said, I would go with a Mossberg 500 as a trunk gun.

Why? Extremely cheap (especially used), very reliable, and parts are dirt cheap. Slap yourself on a metal safety for 15 bucks, and you have one heck of a SD shotgun.

I wouldn't hesitate to go with a Maverick 88 as well. They have a security version (nearly the same as the 500) for well under 200.

00 buck and a few slugs and you'd be good to go.

If its for wildlife protection while fishing, why not a .44mag revolver? It would be on your hip where the shotgun/rifle probably will be on the ground.
BTW mountain lions arent exactly known to be in WI. Been 2 sightings in 15 yrs?

Bad example, sorry. More worried about the WHAT IF scenarios. I usually open carry a SW 1076.

I want a cheap main gun or back-up however you look at it...

2 in 15 years?  I can think of 2 in 2 years in my area.  One of them being a pair, standing over a kill, caught on a game camera.

WI law clearly dictates that any firearm must be encased any time it is on or in a motor vehicle.  The only exception is an unloaded firearm leaning against a motor vehicle.
