Seemed like my last Shepherd (Cain) grew a brain right away. But, after about 6 years is started shrinking. It's hard not to compare my new one to Cain. He's learning/potty training much slower than Cain did. Wife says I need to stop expecting so much of him. I was afraid that I would be this way but I'm trying. I may have jumped in a little too soon but I do love the little monster. Good luck with your new little monster! |
She has already got a stranglehold on the position. Almost amusingly, has doveloped a penchant for trying to dig out her water bowl, till she finds food in the other one.
I hear you on the comparisons, that was probably the biggest reason, I didn't get another Shepherd this time. I will have another, eventually. possibly as a companion for Nass. Ahh yes the joys of potty training. We have a 30 sec window when she needs to go. She'll walk up look at ya, then find a spot if you don't catch the look. The 1st day was not fun at all. |
mine still does that occasionally at 3.5 years old. It kinda comes with the territory of having a dog that lives for water. Wait until she gets a little older and decides to hold water in her mouth until she hits the living room floor and then let it run out (while looking straight at the wife). |

I've got two Labs (both chocolate females). The older one (just turned 9 in June) was 99% housebroken by the age of 8 weeks (we got her at exactly 6 weeks old). She wasn't much of a chewer either. A couple of shoes bit the dust the first few months, but after that she never destroyed a thing. Best behaved dog I've ever had, and I've had plenty of dogs. The other one, however, is a whole differant story. The worst behaved dog I've ever had... when she's left alone (and it's not for lack of intelligence... she as smart as any dog I've ever owned. She's just stubborn, and doesn't like being left alone). We didn't get her until she was 10 weeks old, and she lived outside in a dog run before we got her. It took better than a month to housebreak her. She just turned two on July 9th, and she's just about done with the chewing things to bits.... almost. We still can't trust her in the house when we're gone, and she has her own "chew-proof" room (used to be called the "mud-room" coming in from the attached garage). She already has all the linoleum ripped up from the floor in "her" room, chewed up all the wood trim around the doors about 3' from the floor, and started on the paneling... and if we didn't have steel doors, I'm sure she would've eaten her way to freedom by now. If she wasn't such a sweetheart of a dog otherwise, the wife would've gotten rid of her long ago. I just kept saying "she'll grow out of it". What has "saved" her in my eyes is her hunting abilities. She'd fetch a spare tire floating in the lake if I sent her after it. She's 90 lbs of pure muscle. |
[lol\ ...or decides that the water dish is for swimming, and will do her damndest to get he huge head in that little bowl. I (and the kids) miss Rocky's visits. To the OP, congrats! |
