Okay, okay, I know. I should post this in GD but it's too much of a nuthouse in there.

Anyone own or have first hand knowledge of any of the hybrids currently available? The wife is now driving 60 minutes each way to work and is itching to give up the Beetle. The Prius seems to be the big winner out there but they're so damn ugly.

Hybrids are good for city driving. Is that what she does?
My 05 Corolla has 85k of trouble free miles and gets 37 mpg w/o the added cost of a hybrid.

Like one of the previous posts said, hybrids are typically for city driving. My mom has one and loves it. She drives like, what 2 miles to work and misc other errands during the week & hardly leaves the GB area. On the other hand, my dad works about 45 min away. His solution: get a diesel Volkswagen. I've driven it, learned to drive in it and love it. Its smooth, reliable, and great gas mileage. With the rising cost of diesel about a year ago my dad installed a greasecar kit kit. He now runs the car on diesel to get the vegetable oil heated up then runs it on vegetable oil till the gets to work. If you want to know more info let me know.

hybrids emit more combined Green house gases (due to the manufacturing process+battery), than driving a H1 hummer does. this is combined gases from emissions and "industrial pollution" from creating the vehicles

not so smug now are you hybrid owners[;-)]

Is that really true.  I'd like to hear more about that.

If I remember correctly, there was a warning about driving the hybrids during extremely slippery/icy road conditions. Actually, this was in the owners manual of the Prius and Camry hybrids that the company I work for own. It was something along the lines of "Not for use in snow."

Interesting.  But it really doesn't surprise me.  Advocates of many of these alternatives always seem to conveniently ignore any downsides.  The energy used in manufacturing, the pollution created, the resources used, etc, never seems to be accounted for when people talk about them.

friend runs a camry hybrid... actually gets better highway than city.  No problems in snow (or no more than any other car).

If you've got a beetle...why ain't you looking for a 2000-2003 tdi beetle... should solve all your problems.

People around here with 'em swear by them.
