I saw a couple robins today!

The funny thing is I was up on my roof chopping ice out of the gutters when I saw them. I actually heard them first.

I woke up this morn. to find water pouring in from my front window. This is the second time this winter.  Ice keeps building up in the gutters so the melt water has no where to go but in the window.  I shoveled the first 3ft of the roof and chopped the ice out of the gutters and the water is running fine now out the downspout.  Hopefully this will be OK for a while but I doubt it.  I'm sure it will freeze up again tonight and start building up again!

Any one else having this problem?  I don't know what else to do?  Do you think pouring salt in the gutters would help?  I might try this.

Fill up some panty hose with salt and lay that in your gutters. The panty hose keeps the salt from washing away but the salt will still work.

Panty hose....... its not just for legs anymore

Otherwise get some heat tape and tack that to your roof so it overlaps the gutter, melting the ice from the edge of your roof and keeps the gutters free flowing.

Be careful just shoveling the snow back from the roof edge. You can get a ice dam half way up your roof at the edge of the snow. The snow will insulate any melt water and as soon as it clears the snow it will freeze again. It COULD build up to where you have water running in thru your roof.

Ice dams. I am way too familiar with ice dams this year. Isn't there a specific type of salt that is ok to use on the roof though? I like the panty hose idea.
