| As per this thread I'm curious as to how to get a state ID. I have a handgun on reserve until I can figure out what I want to do. I'm living here as a student so I should be able to get an ID, right? |
| Go to the local DMV. Get yourself a WI drivers' license. No more problems. Everyone is happy. End of issue..... If you have been here for 3.5 years, there is no reason for you not to. Bring your birth certificate, Social Security card, utility bill or bank statement showing over 30 days of activity and your school transcript. This will cover all bases and you will be good to go. You will be asked to surrender your current valid out of state license, take a vision screening and have your picture taken. |
Tax info is independent from license. Residence for state taxes is handled differently depending on your state. Wisconsin for example doesn't car how long you are gone. IF you intend on returning some day, you must continue to pay state taxes while you are gone even though WI taxes are most likely higher. The state you are in also will require you to pay taxes in that state. It is double dipping for the states. |
So if I get a WI ID I won't be forced to pay WI taxes? Will I be forced to surrender my drivers license? My fiance is from here so I figure it might be a useful tool to have if all it does it get me a card saying I'm a "resident". Oddly, I can vote here (and have) but WI firearms law says a student isnt a resident without a license. |
How bad do you want to buy a handgun? Just surrender your NH license and get a WI License. This alone has nothing to do with taxes. When you get back to NH, get another NH license. Shouldn't be a hassle..... |
Don't surrender your license! I surrendered mine in 1992 and I am still stuck here! Now they won't let me back into New Hampshire because I am a "flat lander". |
You need to be in Ill to be a flat lander |
Not according to my family. |
