| I recently bought a AR10T off the equipment exchange, so I went to my local gun store ( Olsons in GB the # 1 gun store around. ) Asked if he could find out what surplus ammo was available so he called the distributor, got off the phone told me NOTHING, it's all gone, the dist told him suprlus 308 might be gone for good... So, now I am looking at getting into reloading..anyone here reload 308 & do you have any tips.. Thanks I also ordered 300 rounds of 308 , so after I shoot it I will have some brass to reload.. |
|
Don't know who his distributer is, but it's obviously not SOG. It ain't the greatest ammo, but it's the cheapest .308 you will find now. |
|
reloading... you need a progressive press... components are fairly cheap, pulldown powder and bullets are reasonable... 8# od WC846 is 80$ and 1K primers 17$, 1K pulled 308 bullets 55$ im a reloading addict, but do not have nearly enough time to load all the ammo i just bought from high tech and pats. |

Yeah, Dan talked me into buying a Lee progressive, so Me save some dough & get one from you guys this summer. along with all the neccasary supplies... Your on late.. Ill stop in at the store next week... Later

If you can return the Lee & go Dillion IMHO |
HSM is only $6.50 a box. It seems like decent stuff so far. Once Wolf comes available again, it will be the best deal going. For precision shooters reloading will be the best option but for plinkers and blasters Wolf and HSM are decent choices. |
Dillon is better than a lee progressive ?

THANK YOU for the link, I just ordered 4 of the 400 round cans.. ( 1600 rounds )

It doesn't look like the pile of Indian that I got. Mine was all packed in plastic packages of 10 rounds. The Indian isn't the greatest surplus out there, but my FAL likes it, and I also have an Enfield 2A that I am going to shoot it through. |
Yes, I believe it's Indian. OFV headstamp. Comes on 5rd stripper clips in bandoleers. Gander Mountian had a bunch this past summer for $70/can. It's been gone for a while. I don't recommend a progressive press for reloading rifle calibers, or for 1st time reloaders. You can't just dump the brass in the feeder and run it like you can pistol ammo. The brass needs to be lubed, resized, de-lubed, trimmed, and deburred before you can prime it and reload it. One can easily load 200 rounds an hour with prepped brass on a single stage. |
I have some tips for you on starting reloading. Read a good reloading manual, Hornady or Speer, then reread them again. Repeat. Work with someone who has done some reloading and practise good work habits. This will save your hide as well as your firearm, but most importantly your hide. Mettalic Cartridge reloading is not difficult to do but you need good work habits. I live just west of GB and would help you get started as I do reload .308, though I nolonger have firearms for that caliber. Let me know. |

the surplus ammo is my " in case of war" supply, you know for the zombies that come marching down the street |
Yes, Dillon is WAY WAY better than Lee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as progressives go Lee is a Ford Pinto and Dillon is a Caddy! With that said, I would do as glockface suggested and get the RCBS single stage kit to start out with. RCBS makes some of the best SS presses there are! Unless you shoot 10s of thousands of rds of pistol a year a Dillon is not needed. IMHO a single stage is the way to go for rifle. You need to do most of the work on one anyway. I live in GB and would be glad to show you the steps involved in hand loading. Let me know if I can help! Stang |
With out a doubt hands down I once had the lees sold them off and got a 650 they are pricey but a much better loader and they still have the lifetime no B.S. warranty a 650 is fine for progressive loading of rifle you will also need a case trimmer go Dillion all the way I have several friends who have 1000s of rifle rounds loaded with a Dillion they have had my 223 & 308 dies plus case trimmer for years so far I have only loaded pistol caliber.9mm 38 357 s&w 40 & 45acp you can get the quick change tools heads and switch out calibers in a few minutes.Dillion is the sole provider of Mini Guns to the U.S. Military he took the original G.E. and improved it 100% |

Thanks, Stang & everyone for the insite...I will be getting ahold of you when I actually purchase a loader. More than likely will be a single stage..since I won't be loading 1000's of rounds to start... but, its all good Info... keep it coming..

I still don't recommend a progressive for rifle ammo unless you are loading blasting ammo. And even with blasting ammo, you will still need to go through all the brass prep. For the cost, a progressive just isn't worth it for rifle calibers. I load a few thousand rounds a year of match .223 for competition, and I do it on a single stage, even though I own an XL650. I also don't recommend a Dillon case trimmer. If you are going to spend big bucks on a motorized trimmer, buy a Giraud. I have a Dillon, but I'll be selling it and replacing it with a Giruad. The best manual trimmer out there is the Wilson from Sinclair. |
Hey B'skin, RCBS makes the "X" die which resizes without running out the brass so once you do an initial trim for consistency you will have less prep if you do use a progressive or single stage. We have one in stock but you better beat me to it because as you know I just built the same rifle you purchased. I had one for my 223 but cannot remember whom I borrowed it to and they must like it because I have not seen it in about 3-4 years. Just come talk to me if you have any questions. You should know that after 20 years. Did you order the Lee through us because I do not remember you asking about reloaders? I would have told you to go single stage for 308. For handgun or 223 I could see going progressive. |

Hey, MH Put it aside for me I will pick it up when I pick up all the Brownells stuff you ordered for me. I was talking to Dan about the lee, no I didnt buy anything yet, that will be this summmer, but I will take the die. !! You can always borrow the die from me... |
