| Anyone have any info on this class. I sent DE an email but received no reply. Anyone been through it or know what is covered? |
Here's a couple of cut and pastes from Sully;
Not mentioned above but covered in the Tactical Reality thread is ballistics and the shotgun, a topic I'm looking forward to. CY6 bulletcatchR |

I forgot to post the cost of the class. This is from the SLR15.com website. http://www17.serrahost.com/servlet/defensive-edgenet/-strse-205/Home-Defense--dsh--Reedsburg%2C/Detail
There is camping at the Driftless for the budget minded. CY6 bulletcatchR |

Since this is a shotgun course, and I'm clearing out some shotgun ammo... Search my Equipment Exchange listings for my shotgun ammo. 15% off listed ammo prices for anyone attending this course, and delivery to the course might be arranged too. |
| Does Driftless have the facilities to teach inside of buildings or is this going to be a lot of theory and explanation while standing on a square range? I guess I am wondering if this is going to be a shooting class or will it encompass tactics and strategies for home defense. A response from DE would have been nice since they are the ones looking to get paid. |

Driftless Rifle Club is actually a farm not a square range (Bulletcatcher owns it and is very gracious with its use). If you want a reply from Defensive Edge you should head over to DE's forum here (they are industry partners) or over to tactical reality witch is a forum owned by DE. |
Both
My pistol range is 'square' in shape, but there has NEVER been a square range mentality here. Driftless does not have a shoothouse, we have 'props' to assist in teaching the fundamentals. If you are looking for a shoothouse the only one I know of 'nearby' (that trains civilians) is at the Site, http://www.shoot-at-the-site.com/ , I have not trained there yet but I would like to take this course; http://www.shoot-at-the-site.com/courses-shoothouse.htm, someday after I get my basics cemented. My interest in "shoothouse" training is oriented towards entering and clearing "strange' dwellings, not my own. The skills I need to work on for my home defense can be practiced in my own house. | Thanks for the info. I know DE has a pretty good reputation on here I just wanted to make sure this is not just a shooting/weapon handling course. The high round count especially on the shotgun lead me to question how much instruction vs. shooting there will be. I really do not care if any rounds are fired just that I learn more about operating in structures. I have had several students express interest in private in-home defensive instruction so I would like to increase my knowledge in this area before I offer that type of training. There have been several Home Invasions in my area lately so interest is high. I assume by props that you have "doorways" and "walls" similar to USPSA/IDPA. Thank you again for the prompt responses and if my schedule works out I look forward to this course. - Mike |

Mike, When I was in Princeton last week I talked to a couple of shooters who took the class in MN. You might try and roust an AAR out of someone in thier HTF. I can speak for the range facilities but the rest is cut and paste from Sully's post, here are my experiences. Last year I took an advanced course that covered working in structures, but it was part of a one day format. This year Sully changed his format from one day classes with pre-requisites to two day classes open to all students. Beginners and alumni alike start one from square one. I took Gunfighting While Protecting Others and Gunfighting From and Around Vehicles in this new 'format' this year, like structures I took one day advanced classes last year. I like the new format, aside from being able to get corrections in the fundamentals it gives everyone on the line a chance to get to know each other and "get on the same page". From a student's perspective Sully's skill is building up a set of drills in the fundamentals that when it comes time to put things together it's like a tailor, all the pieces fit. From an instructor's POV my feeling is you'll be getting a 'bonus' lesson. As far as this Home Protection class, based on the vehicle and protecting others classes I took, my "speculation" is that it will cover specific shooting skills as well as tactics and teamwork.
It will be the lowest round count DETC 2-day class I have taken so far.;-) Instruction versus shooting, I can't answer that specific question, I can be a smartass and say that there will be two days worth of instruction, minus breaks and lunch. I think you mean lecture, "classroom time", the one day Defensive Edge Handgun 1 (MN CCW permit) course was 300 pistol rounds, and there was a alot of lecture, the two day handgun last year had alot of information pertaining to home defense covered, as well as vehicle issues and taking care of your loved ones (...having a plan). Questions on skills, tactics and scenarios come up during class, and Sully is building on "ideas" and information the way he builds on skills. Both vehicle and protecting others class, as well as the home defense class in MN had force on force scenarios. This is only a small test to apply what skills and knowledge we learned in class. It has of analysis by the "jury of shooters", ALOT discussion and correction. This is the gravy IMO. Like none, my advice also is to read alittle of the tactical reality forum, at least Sully's posts on training and training philosophy. CY6 bulletcatchR |
