Passed on a 8 pointer with a decent rack but was kinda narrow (tall but narrow). Saw a doe and two fawns but when I got her to stop she had a tree between me and her vitals (coulda gut shot her but figured that was just plain mean). Sun morn I had a little basket 6 pointer walk right under my stand. Funniest thing I ever saw, he came walking up and stopped like 10 ft from my stand. I hit the grunt call once and he jumped about 5 ft in the air then ran in a complete circle and stopped dead with his nose in the air. I hit the grunt call again and he did the same thing. I musta played with him for 1/2 an hour. When he finaly looked up it seemed like his eyes got bigger around than a dinner plate and he froze. He then tried to sneak away but I hit the grunt call one more time and he took off at full speed. No meat in the freezer but a good time was had by all. BTW my brother got the monster of the woods (7 points on one side and 3 points on the other with a broken main beam). On the one good horn right after the G1 I could not wrap my hand around his main beam and touch finger to thumb. Will post pics when I get a copy of them. |
Where about by Lyndon??? I grew up in that town. BTW there is good hunting up that way after you get to know some of the farmers around. |

Openging day I was not thinking and let a deer walk by unmolested at about 300 yards. I had a perfect broadside shot with my Savage .308. I was looking for horns, it was right after shooting opened and I couldn't tell if it had horns. Don't know why.....everyone has doe tags! It was well within my range. Today, didn't see any deer until right before lunch. The people I was with made a drive, I swapped for the 12 ga. 1100 and was standing on a tractor path in the woods, looking at a small rise, the crest about 25 yards in front of me. A doe popped over the hill and rocketed to my left about 10 yards away. This thing was running full out. I had about 3 seconds to bring the shottie up, swipe the safety, find the front sight and swing into the deer, and fire. She tumbled like a bowling ball and left a skid mark about 20 feet long in ground......neck shot. Needed one more to finish it. Small, but those are the best eating! ![]() I am hooked on woods shooting now. |

<==Not hunting again this year, but... I've been working on a buddy's truck (1969 Chevy C20, but that's another story) up in the Lannon/Sussex area, and I swear there is a 6 pointer that is just begging me to kill it, somehow, some way. It's the damndest thing: This particular deer has walked out in front of me (in the truck, and while on foot), no more than 25 yards away, at least half a dozen times. It's been real tempting to put a .45 caliber hole in him, and test out the new Federal HSTs. My buddy's got 20 acres of woods and doesn't hunt, so I guess this particular buck is holing up on his land. Now I wish I'd gotten my licence. |
Same here - I live on the NW side of MKE. There is a stunning 8 pointer hanging around that'll probably end up under the wheels of a semi before it ends up on someone's dinner table (where it belongs). |
Off 26th ave and 55th st. Cousin used to live there. I think his wife (at the time) was related to teh people who owned Melody Bar. We used to hunt up there all the time when we were kids. Mainly between 59th st, 26th ave and I90 on the papermill land. Hunting isnt the same anymore. We dont have teh 10-15 hunters in the party anymore. Now its just me, my uncle, my dad, brother and his daughter. No more deer drives like we did back then. Hell no one in teh woods even walks teh brush anymore and I get tired of being the only one who will walk in teh thick stuff. |

Typical year for me, no deer |
| Saw 6 doe on opening day. All of them within 70 yds. I just knew I would regret not getting an antlerless tag before the season started. I did see some Elk tracks in the snow, and a couple Bald Eagles though, so the drive North was worth it. There sure were a lot of road kills this year. Seems like a lot more than usual. Such a waste. |
