It is still illegal to carry a hand gun in addition to the rifle or shotgun during deer gun season?

Now I'm confused... when I lived in WI, it was illegal to carry a handgun AND a rifle/shotgun during deer gun season. My question was if it is still illegal, but your reply states it is legal (or illegal) now??

Actually as far back as I can remember it has always been legal to carry a handgun(as long as it was not concealed) to hunt with.

As long as the barrel length of the handgun meets the minimum length for the game type you are hunting it's legal. You could carry a .22lr pistol while deer hunting as long as you intent is to hunt small game with it.

ErikM98 had a lice Q&A thread about a bunch of hunting stuff and I can't find it anywhere now. I'll keep digging and repost the info here  for ya.

Handguns:
• To be legal for deer, handguns must use centerfire cartridges of .22 caliber or
larger and have a 5 1/2 inch minimum barrel, measured from the firing pin to the
muzzle with the action closed.
• You must be 18 years old to hunt with or possess a handgun.
Note: Target shooting with handguns by persons under the age of 18 years is
allowed only when supervised by an adult.
• You may not possess a concealed handgun.
• Muzzleloading handguns, see “Muzzleloaders.”

I actually don't know if you can simply carry a handgun, without using it to hunt, while hunting with a rifle or shotgun,  that doesn't meet the barrel length requirements.  I'm going to assume that you can't, but I'd be interested to know otherwise.

I do know that you can hunt with a handgun in shotgun only areas.

I think those barrel reqs are old.
I seem to remember that 5.5" is mandatory for rimfire, but 4" is g-t-g for centerfire.

I pulled that directly from this years deer hunting regulations pamphlet.  If you can find something in print or on the DNR website that says 4" for centerfire, I'd love to see it.  Bagging a deer with my USP .45 would be sweet.

Handgun Hunting and the law : What are the regulations on the size caliber hand gun you may carry or hunt with during deer gun season?

To be legal for deer hunting, a handgun must shoot centerfire cartridges of .22 caliber or larger and have a  5 1/2 inch minimum barrel length, measured from the firing pin to the muzzle with the action closed.

When did the law changed?  It used to be a matter of foot pounds generated.  It came out to be a .357 magnum load was the smallest caliber allowed. The law was changed about 5 or 6 years ago (~ 1999 / 2000).  In the days when handgun hunting began in Wisconsin the calibers that most people used were the .357 mag, .41 mag, and .44 mag.  There simply were not many others that were popular.  Since that time however, technology surpassed what our original law intended to accomplish.  The Thompson Center and Thompson Contender, along with Remington XP 100's and the like all added to the confusion among our public.  As ammunition manufacturers created new loads for their handguns many became legal since a single load in a caliber met the legal standards (1,000 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle) of that time.  This was all very confusing to the public and to non gun aficionados (nuts).  It created a workload for our DNR frontline staff and our wardens.  So, we proposed a simple definition that anyone could understand; if you can use the caliber for deer hunting with a rifle then you can use it in a handgun.  That meant .22 centerfire or larger.  We have not received significant numbers of complaints from the public since the new law has been in place.  We are not seeing or hearing about significant numbers of wounded deer with handguns either.  That happens even with large caliber magnum rifles too.

why would you want to, besides the fact you look sooooo cool carrying your entire weapon inventory into the woods?

I had a thread about a bunch of questions i had sent to the DNR but the thread seems to be gone so i will copy and past it here again. If anyone wants a copy of the email PM me your e-mail address and i will send it to you.

In order to more effectively answer your questions, I will type them next to your original questions in blue, see below.

I am looking for clafification on a few issues. In the following questions I am refering to  small game mammals and not game birds.

I was always under the impression that you could only use a rimfire firearm for small game hunting. Reading your regulations online I see no mention of anything saying or implying this.  It is not illegal to use a centerfire rifle for Small Game hunting those species that you may use a rifle for.

From what I read it appears as though I may use any caliber centerfire cartrige I choose for small game; providing that the grounds I am hunting on are not specified shotgun only (such as Bong) or during the deer season in shotgun only deer zone.

Outside of a deer gun season you may possess and use a centerfire rifle for hunting small game anywhere the discharge of firearms is not prohibited and you have permission to hunt during the open season for that species. The prohibition on possession of a rifle only pertains to the deer gun season and to state parks which offer small game hunting. In state parks that offer small game hunting only shotguns may be used.

Would it be legal to be in posession of a centirefire firearm larger than .22 caliber durring gun deer season while hunting small game in a gun deer zone though I am not hunting deer nor have a deer tag? You may, so long as you are not in possession of the rifle in a shotgun only area. In shotgun only counties, during a deer gun season, you may not possess a rifle larger than a .22 caliber centerfire rifle, regardless of what you intend to hunt.

Along the lines of the previous question would it be legal to carry a pistol with a barrel length of more than 4" but less than 5" while I am deer hunting with a rifle in a gun deer zone for the purpose of small game hunting? The pistol would not be used to hunt deer. This would be legal

I am also looking for clarification on the issue of small game hunting with a pistol. The laws state that for small game the pistol must have a barrel of at least 4" measured from muzzle to bolt face. I also see no mention of a restriction of centerfire use on this. So I would assume it would be legal to hunt small game with a centerfire pistol except durring deer season in a shotgun deer zone? It is legal to hunt small game with a centerfire handgun chambered for a .22 cartridge or larger, statewide throughout the open season for that small game species, regardless if the deer gun season is open or not as handguns are not prohibited in shotgun only counties.

And finaly, is it legal to hunt with more than one firearm such as a long gun and a pistol on ones self at the same time?

This is legal provided you have the proper licenses to hunt with each firearm, all the firearms are legal for that unit/area, and you are not in violation of any local ordinances for either firearm.

Thank you very much for your time and I would greatly appreciate a response.

Since you don't know what folks intentions or reasons for wanting to take a pistol with are, and there are many reasons to take a pistol with, why don't you just fuck off and leave the thread alone if you can't contribute in a positive manner.

i thought it was 4.5 inches from the firing pin to the end of the barrel.

For a wheel gun I believe you must have a 5"  barrel and the cylinder counts so with a 4" your legal.

(I THINK) but I'm pretty sure Length is from muzzle to firing pin so with auto you would need a full 5" barrel in any center file caliber they change it a few years back so you could hunt with a 25 if you had a 5" barrel now that just plain stupid but that's the DNR they tried to make the requirements more easy to comply with. At one time you could not even get the energy they required from all the magnum loads out there.
I have carried a 6" model 29 or a 4" 586 for drives a scoped 6" 686 when in tree stands just in case I would get a chance to use it.

5.5" from the firing pin to the muzzle. Yes you can carry both as long it is in the open carry of the pistol.
