Guys,
Currently living in SC where gun laws are pretty good.  Interviewing for job in Wisconsin.  How are gun laws there.  The only guns that I have that might be a problem are FAL and sig226 with threaded barrel.  How are taxes in wisconsin?  Tax on vehicles?  Houses?

Gun laws are good...NO CCW, that sucks
Class III friendly state
Taxes are higher than you have now, sales tax of 5%, plus some counties have a county tax of 1/2% ...vehicle taxes are decent (compared to some states)
Property taxes are high relative to the othe cont 48.

DEMOCRAT GOVENOR who is an asshat anti gun former lawyer...a State DA who got nailed for drunk driving....

But we got cheese, corn, beer and the Packers

don't worry about the guns we canv have anything evil that would cause a lib to wet thier pants, including NFA.

What S-P said.  Gun laws pretty decent except for CCW.  Taxes too high, with Republicans trying to freeze local property taxes because the state won't control its own state-level spending.  You know, taxes are too high, so let's put limits on politicians at the local level, who are accountable--while we at the state, who are less accountable because we're further from the individual voter, can do whatever we want (and aren't even thinking about putting any sort of freeze on our own spending).

(Can you tell that one really burns me up??)

One of the best salmon fiheries in the state is south of Milwaukee. It's the root river in Racine. Great place to fish for some bigins and not so bigins. But it can get pretty crowed in some of the areas. Like by the Horlick damn.

Racine also hosts a yearly salmon fishing tourny, though it's future is always up in the air. Summerfest is ussualy a great time too. I'm not to happy about  most of the bands this year, and damn near nothing on the main stage makes me say Oh I have to go to summerfest this year but it can be fun even if the bands are not the greatest while yer there.

When is Salmonarama? Personally i'm not sure I would want to eat anything out of the Root River or Lake Michigan.

Nothing too good in the MIlw. area for bass, but, you're withing a 3 hour drive of most of the state, and some good spots in N. IL.

With the right signoff you can have it. Living in milwaukee county would preclude that.

What to look forward to in wisconsin: Crappy weather. High taxes. Excessive regulation. High taxes. No CCW. High taxes.

Stay away from Madison and you may enjoy WI.  This town makes me sick.  Liberal, some level of government- knows -better- than-you mentality.  Few good rifle ranges in Dane county.  Hell, the sale of handguns in the Madison city limits is forbidden.  Am I rambling?

Move north.....way north.

Not sure I;d want to eat them but there is some great bass fhishing at Quary lake park in Racine about three years ago or so(the last time I fished there) I pulled out a a nice 5-6lb smally. Guys that scuba dive there have by where we bass fish have reported seeing large mouth in what looks to be the 10-15lb range and larger. there have also been some rather large smallies reported too. Lake Kegonsa out by Madison is pretty good for small mouth and large mouth too(I've fished that lake since I was 6, as my granparents live on it) it;s good foe walleye and musky and pike as well. I haven't fished it in two years but I've been told the perch fishing is makoing a comeback, but it always goes in cycles on that lake. crappie fishing is good there too.

So go try and get a sign off and when you get refused by everyone, sue them. Thats about the only way to do it, or goe the easy route and give them the finger by forming a corp. than they don't know you have it and they can't do shit about it cuz it's still legal.

Thats illegal as hell, they can not ban the sale or possession of any gun. State law my man state law. The city should be sued on the grounds of violating the states pre-emption law and for violating the constitutional rights of the citizens of madison if that is true.

The Madison ordinances prohibiting handgun sales are no longer valid. If I'm not mistaken, the reason you will not find a shop selling handguns within the city limits is a zoning issue which no one has yet to challenge.

If yer in an area that allows a gun shop, than how would zoning issues effect what kind of guns you can sell? Sorry got a hard time believing that one. Now if it's zoned in such a way that you can't even open up a gun shop thats a whole nother issue, and still a bullshit one too.

They are just trying to make it so difficult to set up that no one will bother. Here's the zoning regulations for the City of Madison relating to handgun sales:

28.10     MANUFACTURING DISTRICTS

...

59.     Handgun shop, subject to the following conditions:

a.     Such shop shall be located in a building of Type 5 construction as defined in ILHR 51.03(5), Wisconsin Administrative Code.

b.     No handgun shop shall be located within 1000 feet of any church, synagogue, temple, mosque or any other place of worship, any lot in a residence district, either in the City of Madison or in a municipality adjacent to the City of Madison, any of the following planned developments which allow residential dwelling units: planned community development, planned unit development, and planned community mobile home parks; any public park, any private or public

elementary, secondary or vocational school, any public or private playground, any day care center, any public library, any youth recreation area including little league baseball fields, soccer fields, or YMCA/YWCA.

c.     No handgun shop shall be located in the same detached building where alcohol beverages are sold.

d.     No handgun shop shall be located in the same detached building where any patron thereof under the age of 18 years may enter, unless accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult spouse 18 years of age or over.

(Cr. by Ord. 11,506, 1-26-96)

Places that sell handguns must be located in an area zoned for  manufacturing and be located about a gazillion miles away, preferably in the the next county. In addition, kids under 18 can't enter unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. You can see why a sporting goods retailer like Gander Mountain wouldn't bother with handgun sales.

Belgianbeast,

Stay in SC.  Im moving south when I get a chance.  If it is a bigger pay cut that you are after, Wisconsin's taxes and over-priced houses will level off your pay increase to the point where you would have been better off staying where you are now.  I have some friends from SC who are living just north of Milwaukee who said they went for Wisconsin because of the larger wages his job offered him- turned out to be a loss.  They had to decrease their house size by at least half (housing prices are fricken ridiculous) and taxes offset his pay gain.

Good point. Take a look at your cost of living compared to where you are at now. Combined with all the taxes (property, income, gas taxes) you're probably better off making less where you are at right now. Not to mention you don't have to deal with snow for 5 months of the year.

As a comparo, tell us what the cost of living is out in SC.  Out here in Racine, 20 miles S. of Mil., gas is $2.15, a nice 3 bdr home is about $160K.

Here I am movin here from Connecticut and i am thinkin i got a bargain, No yearly vehicle taxes , No emmisions for vevicles (Just another tax), Same income tax , same sales tax. If anyone is ever bored look for a house in Greenwich CT. Had an 88 tempo I paid $100 for one time went to pay my taxes they want $130. Fought and Fought till they pulled my plates for unpaid taxes. Just remember , the grass is not always greener.  CT= without the smile and with glass in the lube

I was pretty impressed with the cost of housing.  I saw a condo that was terrific but price $467000.  Arrgghhhhhhhh.  Taxes $10000/year.  I will consider going there but will need some serious bucko.  Will let you guys know.  Does wisconsin also have taxes on vehicles.  That is one thing I can not stand in SC.  I have a motorcycle (2001 ducsti), they still want over $350 every year.  That  just does not make sense to me. In NY state you paid tax once when purchase a vehicle.  In SC it is every year.
5/29/2005 7:05:04 AM EDT
[#35]
In WI, after you pay your initial sales tax when you buy a vehicle, there are no more taxes or fees, except for annual registration, $55 per year for cars, $26 per 2 years for bikes.  Driver's license renewals are $22, no helmet law in WI, and lax enforcement of aftermarket goodies ( unless you're doing something really wrong) on bikes.

ooooh, a whole .8 cents per year.  I'm not concerned over such a trivial amount, however I am concerned that most gas stations jack it up 8 cents.

Slightly Off topic but..
Madison, WI resident here, just moved back. I've had an impossible time finding a range to shoot at. Anyone know of any near Madison that are still open? I used to go to one in Middleton, but that was torn down due to Beltline expansion.

Having to drive an hour and a half up to Portage whenever I want to shoot is getting annoying fast.

Well for starters you must live in Madison by way of Janesville if it takes you an hour and a half to get to the Portage range.  35 minutes from my door to the driveway of the range (if I dont have to go thru monona to grab Tommy that is).

when you get off the interstate to head to the dells on 16 from portage watch on the right hand side maybe a mile down. You will see a pepsi sign out by the road with a flag by it. Turn in there and it will take you to the range.
It is members only but if you pony up your 25$ per year you are good to go.
Just walk into the club house (providing someone is there) and they can sign you up and have you shooting the same day.

Do a search for the Portage Rod and Gun club for the addy and phone number.

Downside is that the trap shooters are trying to take over the range.
It is only a 100 yrd range but it has a separate pistol range and pretty decent ppl around most of the time.
