There was a planned trip about this a while back, but as I remember was canceled. Well, I told my friend that this could probably be a fun trip, and he and his dad are pretty big hunters. Now that I have my M4gery, I want to do it even more. I know that 5.56 will put down a boar, so that isnt an issue. Where would I find boars to hunt in WI? I am in Schofield (little south of Wausau). Thanks,Tyler BTW what would be a good round for boars? |

Douglas county, though where exactly i'm not sure. Crawford County around Gays Mills and than also around Black River Falls(not in crawford county). As for ammo, Black hills 60gr partition, black hills 60gr softpoint, anyy quality 55gr soft point should also work, the 64gr winchester power point or power point plus. ummm what else, I think thats about all off the top of my head. A buddy wants to go hit Crawford to scout for them, not sure when exactly but he was talking about Feb. some time. Thats about all I got for ya. oh and don't expect them to be to big. last I heard from the DNR the weights that have been reported to them of hogs has been from 40-100lbs. i;ve heard there are bigger ones though. |
The area is designated 'bow only'. |
Some Russian boars can get upwards of 300-400lbs, and even larger rarely. Be sure to carry something like a .44 mag or larger revolver for backup in case one gets up close to you, or empty the mag of your AR. A few hundred pound boar running at 30mph can put you in a wheelchair if you're not careful. My father used to raise hogs and they are viscious motherfuckers.

By who? If not by the DNR than it could be very much BS. What area ofthe county, something really fishy about that stuff..... |
Ya probably won't see any that size, or if you do there are probably very few, most of these from my understanding came from a domestic hogs that got out, there was some reports about possible boars that got out of a game farm so who knows for sure. but the vast majority being reported about are 120lbs and under. Not saying the bigin's are not out there, just that they will probably be pretty rare. |

A wild hog/boar of any size when put in a corner or wounded will turn on you. I trap a lot of hogs and hunt them year round. While in the trap even the small shoats will charge you against the wire. As far as the .223, it will kill them. I would try for a clean shot behind the ear or the neck. A shot behind the shoulders will not bring them down. Hogs are not like deer, who's lungs extend down the rib cage. You will have to go throught he shoulder to get the lungs, unless it is quartering away shot. With out a good hit you will be looking for them and shooting them several times hog anatomy This is a good site for info, you can learn all about them here. The Forums are good to, but the history got nuked by a hacker a while back, so there is not much on the forums at this time. bunch of good people there too. AR10 hog: ETA: I ment to tell you that there are a couple of people on there that are from WI, they may be able to hook you up with some info on where you can go. |
No doubt. Most are only around 100 lbs like you said. I have heard from friends though who have seen much larger hogs in the wild. But they are rare. Just be careful. |
We have lots of areas up here that are bow only. We even have city permits to bow hunt deer around the edges of Superior. I don't have a bow but I could hunt on an island a few blocks from where I live. I got word of the 'bow only' area (one of the areas) from a local hunter who really knows his shit. The areas might be deemed too close to/or in city limits. |
i know what yer talking about now. It's bow only because your still inside the limits of the city or something similar because of a no discharge of firearms law or something. |
You need to check out the site I linked. There is a whole bunch of info there. I could write a book here, but it is all on that site. Below is a link of just a small part of the info there to be had. It will not only give you the basics, but will give you info that would take a long time for you to learn on your own. If you find specific questions, you can IM me or join the forum on Texasboars. We have guys from Australia and Hawaii and who knows where else. Everyone is real free with the info, all you got to do is ask, and no question is considered a dumb one. As I mentioned before there are several on there from your neck of the woods. Here is the link-----> Hunting wild hogs 300RSAUM hog: And yes, My wife hunts as well: Here is one of my buddy's AR10 hogs Here is one of my favorite pics with a turkey as well (one on the hoof) |

I just wanted to add that I saw this thread when I checked the "active topics" button today. I did not come to your home forum looking for it nor try to high jack it. You asked for info and I have provided you possibly the best source in the world for it. thanks and have a great weekend, Art |
Thanks for posting cuz that board looks like a great spot for info. I registered but still can't log in yet.... |
