8 pointer, about 150 lbs.... actually shot it 3 times, thing wouldn't die!!! First shot knocked him over from about 60 yds, he got up and ran with his tail up. Second shot knocked him over again from about 70 yds, got up and was walking at a good pace with his tail down. Third shot put him down again at about 85 yds, he did his dying act and that was it. All 3 shots hit just behind the front shoulder. I think he was still in rutt and running on adreinaline. We also got two numb bucks, and a decent size doe (about 130 lbs). I'll get the pictures up when I can. |

thats why they call him "THEKILL" |
Red X. Your webspace is secured. Edit: I clicked "ok" when Wondoze told me I was entering a secure page. Nice deer! That there is some good eatin'! |
I was running to get the guys making the drive out of my line of fire when the deer popped out too, so I was a little winded. Also had to turn to my right 90 degrees, and make sure I wouldn't hit the four horses that I was shooting over in the pasture. This load drops 8.3 inches at 250 yards. Time of flight at that range is .3 seconds. Deer run at probably 20-25 MPH (depending on the gait). That makes a lead of roughly a foot. Ballistics and Math are your friend. That said, wobble zone makes a hit like that pretty tough. I either shot standing or kneeling supported.....I was on autopilot and don't remember. There was a good amount of luck involved. But it's important to know what your ammo does "out there", it helps tremendously. |
Do like sully says and make sure you rotate the gun up off your shoulder |
Nah.....I had enough time to make the turn, and it was only 90 degrees! |
Steep uphill shot in heavy brush running left to right at about 40 yards using Fed 150 gr. soft point ammo. It was more of a shotgun type shot, swing and fire a couple of double taps. now to go back out and fill the rest of the tags. |

Well ladies and gentlemen, who had more good luck over the holiday? I went back to my friends place, I was one of the drivers all day Saturday. There was around 6 inches of snow on everything, it was very pretty and peaceful. The snow and temps right around freezing played hell with optics and things though. Kicked some does out of some pines right away and the standers missed. One guy grazed a doe, he was having big problems due to snow and water accumulating in his objective lens. I walked into a clearing and a big lump of snow started moving about 20 feet away. I always ID target before shooting, so I waited. The lump burrowed at high speed under the snow and brush for about 30 feet then popped up to my left.....a big doe. I brought my shotty up....sight picture was a bunch of snow clumps. Like it or not, I use the sights and pick where I want to put the shot, so I wiped the snow off the sights and regained my sight picture. By now, the doe was hauling ass up the hill toward where I thought one of the standers were, so I checked fire and yelled up the hill to the guy. Turns out he was well back and I could have fired safely...doh! He fired twice from about 75 yards and missed it. It was a great hunt though. How did everyone else do? |

I got an 8-pointer on tuesday. 5x3 with a 14.5 inch inside spread, dressed out 159. I don't have the digital pics yet...sorry. It was all of a 15-20 yard shot, running straight at me in a plowed field (I was posted behind some scrub on the edge of the field)...severed his trachea and jugular and ultimately burried the slug in his spine. Head dropped instantly and he did a foreward sommersault...I love CNS hits.
